Town Column : Aquinnah

Well, we're half way through February, which means spring is just around the corner: flowers and sunshine and...oh, who am I kidding? March is the worst month here in my opinion, colder than you expect and with a wind that sounds like it's just waiting to kill you if you walk out your front door. And it's a long month to boot, filled with ice and ill will.
Thank God for the movies. Yes, the movies. There will be a children's movie on Thursday, Feb. 26 from 4:30 to 6 pm, at the Aquinnah library, the Martha's Vineyard Film Festival is happening March 13, 14, and 15 at the Chilmark Community Center (call or email me if you would like to volunteer or loan us a sofa) and finally, the Oscars are this Sunday. The red carpet segment begins at 8 pm, the ceremony starts at 9 pm, and goes on way too long, but I always watch to the bitter end even though I say at the end of each ceremony I'm never watching again. Could we have a town Oscar pool? Is that legal? I'm happy to organize it as long as that means I won't be exempt from winning. If it's not legal, could we have a Tribe Oscar pool? Is that legal? I might have to call Tobias and find out.
If live theater is more your thing go to Che's Lounge in Vineyard Haven next weekend to see some Aquinnah people performing. On Friday and Saturday nights at 7 pm, Shakespeare For the Masses is back with a staged reading of Measure For Measure. It's free and don't worry if you're not that familiar with the story, there is a narrator (me) to break it down for you. On Sunday at Che's, Joan LeLacheur and the Spindrift Marionettes are performing at 11:30 am. The show is quick, beautiful, and once again, free. All ages are welcome.
Some people say that the only person you can change is yourself, it's just that it's more fun, or perhaps distracting, to try to change others instead. However, if you are interested in changing yourself or getting more centered, I hope you were able to check out Christian Minson's Transformative Breath Workshop that happened last week at the Duck Inn. He spoke of the power and necessity of breath and then led the attendees through some breathing exercises. One woman who was there said that the cold she had when she went in to the workshop was completely gone by the end. There is the possibility of a series of these workshops in May or June.
That's all for now. Stay warm and remember that spring is, if not just around the corner, at least closer than it was in December.
