Shop Talk

Every year at the beginning of May, most of us pause to spend a day honoring our mothers, the women who have given so much of themselves to us. This year, even though it's always been a success, I decided to depart from predictability - giving one of Donaroma's gorgeous bouquets - and surprise my mom with something a little different.
With temperatures in the 80s, Sunday was the perfect day to hit the pavement in search of a gift. After my Mocha Mott's iced coffee was strapped to my hand, a necessity for any Island shopping adventure, I began my quest.
My first stop, on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs, was Sanctuary. As you walk into the store the soft lighting and displays of plaques with meaningful sayings create a soothing atmosphere. Wandering past the well stocked shelves, I found everything from Willow Tree angels to rocks that read, "A mother holds her child's hand for a while and their hearts forever." After looking around and finding several great possibilities for any mother, I decided to continue the search. It was too much fun to stop now.
Next stop, Vineyard Haven, Main Street, and CB Stark, a jewelry store whose slogan alone, "Making Island memories since 1966," encompasses the very idea of what I was looking for; something that she could have as a reminder of all the memories we have shared. CB Stark has case after case of unique and timeless pieces that would fit any occasion, everything from delicate wampum bracelets to carefully crafted silver pieces. One item stood out, their signature charm bracelet. I loved the idea of being able to add to it in the future. It is something that years later can tell a story. Definitely an idea worth considering.
More stores to check before giving in to calls to join friends for sushi at the Lookout Tavern. Sipping a frozen cocktail, the sun beaming, and just the right gift for my mom stashed safely in my bag, I couldn't help but feel satisfied.
To my mom and mothers everywhere, thanks.
