Town Column : Aquinnah

I do believe I made a vow in these very pages a month or so ago to stop complaining about the weather and I have kept that vow. If you catch me on the street and it's raining, that's fair game in my book - you know I'm going to gripe. So, I will just say how Seattle-esque the Vineyard has seemed lately and that I, for one, do not want to live in Seattle. That is all I'll say. No, wait - I will also say that the lawns and flowers and trees look amazing due to all the rain. Everything up-Island is so lush and thick and the lilacs are coming out. It is really lovely, if you can get outside to enjoy it, whenever it stops raining.
I hear that Faith's Seafood Shack is off to a great start with really good steamers and sushi. I stopped by Menemsha Fish Market the other night and had some dynamite seafood gumbo and lobster bisque.
Ella Mahoney is off to England this Friday with her class and her brother, Emerson, just made a special Little League team. Martha's Vineyard Little League sponsors the team and they will go to Cooperstown, N.Y., for a week-long baseball expo at the start of the summer.
Roberta Gross, a seasonal Aquinnah resident, will have an art opening at the Chilmark Library on June 13 from 3 to 5 pm, titled Recent Paintings: Photographs and Collographs. There will be a light buffet following the opening at her house. Lisa Vanderhoop's pictures at the Chilmark Bank were great; I hope you got a chance to see them.
More and more seasonal residents are starting to return. I saw Anja May and her two sons the other day and everyone looked tan and healthy. Kathy Born, who divides her time between Cambridge and Aquinnah, is now an Aquinnah homeowner after renting for six years. Congratulations, Kathy. Summer resident Paula Eisenberg will be arriving here from Larchmont on the 16th.
Jim and Kathy Newman spent most of last week with their two kids and granddaughter Sage.
I have gotten some positive responses to the idea of a ride share page/bulletin and I have been pointed in the direction of a couple of websites that could possibly host a ride share page. I may actually have to take action on this idea, and, rest assured, if I do you will hear about it.
I did promise not to complain about the weather, but I said nothing about traffic, which is already getting worse (more reason to carpool). So far the traffic, which is mostly around the ferry, hasn't bothered me that much, but I have started seeing an increasing number of mopeds up-Island, which makes me a little nervous. I don't know if I'm ready for the full onslaught of summer traffic yet.... Maybe I will take a little more rain.
