Polly Hill workshop
Polly Hill Arboretum introduces the Planter Box Workshop, which will be taught by Janice Shields of Cut It Out on Saturday, June 13, from 9 to 12 pm. Participants will build a rustic planter box, designed to hold container plants. Pre-registration is recommended due to limited space. Admission is $95 per person; $85 for Polly Hill members. A rainy morning did not dampen the spirits of, from left, Dawn Sayre, Leslie J. Elaine Pace, author, former teacher, school administrator, and writing coach will lead a discussion table involving career and volunteer job opportunities. Learn how to apply for jobs, and how to identify your strengths and skills in order to find the most rewarding job opportunity. The program is on Thursday, June 4 from 2 to 3:30 pm. Winning designs
West Tisbury students Phoebe Dandeneau and Peter Ruimerman won first and second place, respectively, in the Massachusetts Arson Watch poster contest. They each received a framed award from Arson Watch and checks in their names were donated to the West Tisbury fire department.
Plan for the future

Wartime recollections
Jim McLaurin will be the guest speaker at the Oak Bluffs Senior Center's Friday conversation group from 10 to 11:30 am. Mr. McLaurin will give a DVD presentation and discuss his memories of Tuskegee airmen who became prisoners of war during WWII.
M.V. School of Ballet
The children who attend the Martha's Vineyard School of Ballet presented "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," and "Phantom of the Opera" on Sunday, May 31, at the MVRHS Performing Arts Center. Sarah Pertile played the role of Snow White, and the Phantom was played by Kendra Frank. After the showing of "Phantom of the Opera," everyone enjoyed refreshments.

Breathe and achieve
Christian Minson, transformational breath facilitator, visits the Yoga Barn this coming Wednesday for a Transformational Breathing Workshop. From 1 to 4:30 pm, Ms. Minson works to accelerate healing, well-being, and enthusiasm through Breathflow Transformational Breathing. According to the press release, the workshop is ideal for those under stress, with chronic pain, or struggling with addictions, and costs $60. India for a month
A Mumbai teenager kicked off a month of India-inspired activities and events at the Vineyard Haven Library this week. At 7 pm each Tuesday during June, the library will feature films, speakers, Indian cooking, a marionette show, and, still being planned, a workshop on henna.
The ambitious program began on June 2, when the library showed "Slumdog Millionaire," the Oscar-winning Bollywood movie.
On Tuesday, June 9, Kara Baer, a well-known expert on Bollywood, will introduce the conventions of Bollywood films, songs, and celebrities.
Another provocative Bollywood movie, filmed in the Hindi language, will be offered Tuesday, June 16, at 7 pm.
Then, on Wednesday the following week, June 24, Priya Datta, an experienced caterer and cooking teacher, will present Indian cooking.
The month winds down on Saturday, June 27, with The Spindrift Marionettes production of "The Butter Thief," a story from the childhood of Krishna.
The Vineyard Haven Library's exploration of India started on Tuesday, June 2, 7 pm, and continues weekly through Saturday, June 27. For more information, call the library at 508-696-4211.
Margaritaville at the Sand Bar
The Sand Bar & Grille restaurant supported the MVRHS Girls Ice Hockey Booster Club by hosting Margaritaville 2009 on Friday, May 29. The evening included margarita tasting, food, music, and dancing. There was also a silent auction, and a raffle for a laptop computer.

Spiritualized
In Touch Ministries, a Christian organization, will host Inspiration Weekend 2009 this weekend, June 5-7, at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs. The three-day event will include teachings, music, and comedy, along with appearances from Charles F. Stanley, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta and the group's founder.
On Friday, SQuire Rushnell and Louise DuArt, a touring musical comedy duo, will perform "Couples Who Pray - Live!" based on their co-authored book. Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., performers, authors, and Grammy-Award winning recording artists, will also perform. The Annie Moses Band, a Christian family of Juilliard-trained musicians and songwriters, will take the stage on Saturday. Sunday will feature appearances from local musicians.
Weekend admission costs $50; one night costs $30. Vineyard residents get a special rate of $10 per evening. Discounted tickets can be purchased at Aboveground Records, MV Chamber of Commerce, and daRosa's.

"Master Harold" came to Vineyard Haven
Chimaera Physical Theater, a Massachusetts-based company, performed "Master Harold...and the boys" last Friday and Saturday, May 29 and 30, at the Unitarian Universalist Society in Vineyard Haven. Under the direction of Mollye Maxner, the production creatively imagined Athol Fugard's play, set in St. George's Park Tearoom in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, during the 1950s Apartheid era. The performance was made possible by a Career Development grant from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and Semans Art Fund.
Ballroom Dancing
The Martha's Vineyard Ballroom Dancers continue weekly ballroom dance lessons this Sunday with a waltz lesson with Jack Burton and Carol Carrick. Couples and singles of all levels are welcome for a $3 donation. Beginners arrive at 6 pm and the lesson is from 7 to 7:30 pm, at the Unitarian-Universalist Chapel in Vineyard Haven. For the kids
The 15th annual Children's Benefit Golf Tournament for the Martha's Vineyard Boys and Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters of M.V. takes place this Sunday, June 7, at Farm Neck Golf Club in Oak Bluffs. Registration is at 7:15 am and continental breakfast is served at 8 am. The tournament is rain or shine, shotgun start, with a handicap-adjusted five-player scramble for $250.
