Have hoops, will travel
The girls 7th and 8th grade travel basketball team won three of four games at the Kim Kraft Invitational, at Falmouth Academy, this past weekend.
On Saturday the Islanders beat Bourne, 33-20. Maggie Riseborough and Tiana Souza were high scorers, each with 8 points. Jenny Lindland pirated a dozen steals. Katherine DeBettencourt had 6 points and 6 assists. Katie Stewart and Katie Johnson were strong on the boards.
The Martha's Vineyard girls lost the second Saturday game to Harwich. Both Lindland and DeBettencourt scored an even dozen points. Hayley Maciel drained a timely three-pointer, putting Martha's Vineyard ahead with 10 minutes left on the clock, time well spent by the Roughriders, who won, 41-35.
On Sunday, the Islanders beat Burlington, Vt., 33-16, behind Lindland's team-high 13. Kendall Robinson added 10 and was 4 for 6 at the foul line. Hannah Moore and Rae Filley provided strong D. Kaitlyn Hutchinson contributed five steals. Haylee McCarthy and Alex Mazza provided board strength.
Later Sunday, the Vineyarders beat the host Falmouth team, 37-26. Jenny Lindland had the game-high 11 points.
Both Riseborough and DeBettencourt contributed nine.
Youthful hoopsters impress
The Martha's Vineyard 6th grade boys travel basketball team won two and lost one at the Barnstable Youth Tournament over the weekend.
In the first game, the Islanders got by Falmouth in an exciting squeaker, 39-37, overcoming a 13-point deficit at halftime. Colin Cameron led the Martha's Vineyard parade to the hoop, scoring 16 points. Matt Stone had 10 and Tim Roberts added 7. Yannick Gonsalves was key to the Vineyard defense.
In game two, Martha's Vineyard fell to a tough West Warwick squad. Trailing by just one point at the half, the Islanders had trouble with the Rhodies' effective full-court press in the second half and finished the game 10 points down.
The third game was a convincing win for the Vineyard over Barnstable, 43-33. Matt Stone was the Martha's Vineyard high scorer with 11 points. Cameron and Gonsalves each added eight.
Tim Roberts and Mike Mussell keyed the Vineyard defense.
The team begins seasonal play in the Cape Cod Youth Basketball League with a home game versus Raynham on Sunday, Dec. 7.
