Vito retires
Vito Capizzo, the colorful Nantucket head football coach has announced his retirement, ending a 45-year career that saw his teams amass an impressive record of 293 wins, 139 losses and eight ties,
He took the Whalers to the super bowl nine times, winning three.
Probably most Vineyard football players who went up against one of Vito's Nantucket teams over the years have strong memories of the occasion, many tinged with "it might have been" as the Whalers more often than not won the contest in the early years.
Martha's Vineyard Regional High School Athletic Director Mike Joyce played on the 1985 team, which ended a string of losses to Nantucket by beating Capizzo's Whalers, 12-2. The game featured a blocked kick by Erik Blake, now chief of police in Oak Bluffs, who picked up the live ball and raced 52 yards for a touchdown. It was a game that Mike will never forget.
The Inter-Island rivalry took a decided turn with the advent of Donald Herman as head football coach at Martha's Vineyard Regional in 1988. Since then the Vineyarders have won 12 of the last 20 inter-island games, including all of the last six.
Asked by The Martha's Vineyard Times how he felt about the retirement of Coach Capizzo, Coach Herman first spoke of the impact on the inter-island football rivalry of which Vito Capizzo played so large a part. However his retirement was "inevitable," Coach Herman said. He was gratified that Vito was able to make his own decision. "He was an outstanding coach."
