MVAA winners at Old Sculpin
Every year the Martha's Vineyard Art Association awards college scholarships to two high school seniors who are pursuing the fine arts. The work of the this year's recipients, Ray Ewing and Phuong-Lan Ho, along with that of scholarship alternate Janelle Fortes, is on display at the Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown. A reception was held on Saturday, June 13.
In his artist's statement, Mr. Ewing wrote, "I want to use my camera as an all-encompassing way of life."
Ms. Ho wrote, "I used the art department in high school as my own private office." Her work includes architectural and interior design, acrylic paintings and drawings.
"I used to teach both recipients, so to see them receive such an honor is thrilling," Melissa Breese, the gallery's director, said.
Sails at Shaw Gallery
On Saturday, June 20, the Alison Shaw Gallery in the Oak Bluffs Arts District, will hold an opening reception from 4 to 7 pm for its SAIL Show, which features photographs of boats and sails.

"I like the fact that this show has new images I have taken and older photographs as well," Ms. Shaw said. "Looking at the older photographs gives me a chance to reflect on my work and to reinvent my old pieces. For some of my newer images I have used a technique, which can be described as painting with my camera. I use a slower shutter speed and move my camera as I take the picture."
Throughout the summer, the Alison Shaw Gallery will present themed shows, including Studio Show, a Sea Show, and a Structure Show. The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday, 2 to 6 pm, or by appointment or chance. For more information, visit alisonshaw.com, or call 508-696-7429.

"I have chosen Max Decker to open and to close my season," said gallery owner Michael Hunter. "He is my bookends for the season. He plays with the genre of landscape paintings beautifully, exploring pigmentation and light. This is the first offering of his new works for 2009, and I think people will be very impressed."
Mr. Decker, who divides his time between Brooklyn, N.Y., and West Tisbury, works with oil on canvas and oil on board, on pieces that range in size.
The show will be up through July 15. For more information, visit piknikmv.com or call 508-693-1366.
