Night sounds
Shannon Whitworth:Whitworth's angelic voice billows above her band like smoke over a simmering fire. Hers is a sound that braids country twang with sultry calm - a sound rooted in something antique and spiritual. Her band alone is worth the price of admission. Saturday night at The Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven as part of KCT Concerts.
Liquid: Expect anything. A meteoroid of flamboyant funk is about to descend. At least, that's the idea. The group, not yet out of the box, is composed of a handful of Vineyard party-band all-stars who've set their sights high for their debut performance of boisterous funk, rock, and hip-hop covers. This Thursday kicks off a weekly residency at The Lampost in Oak Bluffs.
Old Silver Band: West Falmouth three-piece inhabits a heady realm somewhere between bluegrass, reggae, and adult contemporary rock. Duel vocals, acoustic skanks, searing mandolin solos. After a few years on the college and festival circuits, they've collected a faithful fan base that appreciates their exuberant performances - and hairdos. Friday night at The Wharf in Edgartown.
Jon Zeeman: Guitarist Zeeman plays with a fine touch and texture that suggests a long, healthy axe obsession. He composes adventurous jazz, funk, and blues, which can get seriously smooth. A clean sound, even when rhythmically ornate. Wednesday night at Atlantic Fish and Chop House in Edgartown.
Elio Villafranca Quartet: Classically trained pianist fuses jazz and Cuban roots to create elegant and complex compositions. Friday at the Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs. The Emilio Valdés New Cuban Quartet: Fierce Cuban percussionist who describes his music as "afro-beat, nu-Jazz, and alternative." Mystifying, but so is his innovative sound. Saturday night at Union Chapel.
