Travel kicks
The Under-10 MV travel soccer team entered the Friendship Tournament at Swansea, Sunday, a fun day for some young soccer players. The Islanders lost their first game to Nantucket, 2-0, and their second game to Dartmouth, 2-1. The Indians scored the game-winner with just eight seconds remaining on the clock.

The Islanders won their third game, shutting out their closest league rivals, Freetown-Lakeville, 3-0.
The Friendship Tourney closed out a highly successful U-10 season.
The U-12 boys stayed unbeaten at 9-0 with a resounding 6-1 win over Barnstable in a South Coast Soccer League semi-final Saturday at the West Tisbury School. Jason Lages put the ball in the onion bag five times and Alex Gordon-Beck headed in the other goal early in the first half. The U-12s will play Dartmouth in the league final Saturday at Cape Cod Community College in Barnstable. Match time is 1:30.

Also on Saturday, the Under-18 boys played a very physical SCSL semi-final with Fall River and won, 3-0. Scoring for the Vineyard were Leandro Trinidad, Julian Willett-Beck, and Alex Poole. Coach Phil Dwane expressed his pleasure and admiration for his team's hard work and cool heads despite provocations. The U-18s will play Barnstable in the league final on Sunday.
The Under-16 team defeated Dartmouth, Friday, 3-0. Sunday they edged Sandwich at Sandwich in a South Coast League semi final game, 3-2. The third goal, which turned out to be the winner, was scored by Felipe Freitas . Goaltender Rafael Maciel earned kudos for his play, as did Augusto Nunes, who scored, and Leif Iversen and Griffin Gardner.
The win gained the U-16 Islanders a berth in the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions for the second year in a row. The tourney will be played at Lancaster, June 26-28.
The U-14 boys semi-final at Taunton was moved up to this Saturday at 10 am.
Little leagues reach playoffs
Playing the last games on their schedules, Saturday, at Veira Park, the Red Sox squeezed by the Cubs, 2-1, behind the effective pitching of Tucker McNeely and Jack Slayton. When Slayton wasn't mowing down the Cubs from the pitching mound he was taking hits away from Cubbies from his shortstop position. Mason Jeffers, Ryan Uva, Avery Miner, Russ Shapiro, and Paul Jeffers-Mayhew all contributed to the Sox defense.

Also Saturday at Veira a troika of Tiger tossers held the Mets to a single run. The terrible trio, Matt Stone, Kevin Cleary, and James Cleary allowed the Mets just four hits.
Nick Kent made a run-saving snag of a screaming line drive off the bat of Pete Engley to preserve the slim lead.
Kent, Mitchell Chaves, and Kevin Cleary all hit safely twice.
Game three of the Saturday trifecta found the league's top two teams facing off. The A's extended their lead over the Cards to four games with a 13-6 win.
Morgan Michalski was the winning Mets pitcher, fanning five and walking one. He was 2 for 3 at the plate with
a walk.
On Friday the Cardinals downed the Cubs, 11-5, behind Austin Morley. Emily Turney and Austin Chandler had big run-producing hits for the Cards. Jacob Cardoza had two hits and scored two runs for the Cubs.
Wednesday the A's Colin Cameron shut out the Tigers, facing just 19 batters, one more than the minimum, in the 12-0 game.
Playoffs begin
Monday at Veira, the fourth-seeded Cubs were home to the cellar-dwelling Mets in the first major league playoff game. The Mets jumped off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Aaron Lowe singled and came home on Pete Engley's triple. They batted around and upped the ante by six in the second, accepting four walks and an error and scoring three runs on Lowe's bases-loaded double.
The Cubs scored twice in their half of the second. Nate Backus walked and Nicco Cardoza followed with a single. Both scored with help from Mets miscues.
The third inning was scoreless.
In the top of the fourth the Mets batted around again and scored four runs on two walks and two hits: a single by Tim Maciel and pitcher Morgan Michalski's double.
In the Cubs half of the fourth Backus and Cardoza reached with singles and moved up on a wild pitch, but were left stranded on base as Michalski retired the next three batters, two on strikes, the other with a grounder to first unassisted.
The Mets' 11-2 lead grew to 17-2 in the top of the sixth ending he Cubs hopes for playoff honors.
Holmes Holers set sail
The Holmes Hole Sailing Association began its summer season of handicap racing with a tune-up race from Vineyard Haven Harbor on Sunday, June 14.
Six boats posted for the start at red nun six outside the breakwater for the noon commencement of the 35th season of Association races. Hugh Schwarz, one of the HHSA founders, was on the race committee boat.
It was a rainy morning with an east wind of 5-10 knots.
The fleet sailed twice around a triangular course of about five miles.
The first leg from red nun 6 to red nun 4 at West Chop was a close reach on the starboard tack. After rounding red nun 4 the fleet beat to windward to green can 23A at East Chop, with most sailors heading into the Sound to take advantage of the east-setting current. After rounding the green can the fleet ran downwind to nun 6.
Finishing first was Jerry Goodale in his Pearson 32, Stormalong. Second was Mike Loberg in the Morris 36, Masquerade. Rob Hale was third in his Soling, Wicked. Fourth was Phil Hale with Mischief. Roger Becker was fifth in Gloria and John Amabile was sixth in Solitude.
Summer racing continues with two harbor races Sunday, June 21, at 10 am and 2 pm. New members are actively encouraged, as are guest boats. Anyone interested should call Diane Hartmann at 508-693-4592.
Babe Ruth playoff
The Vineyard's three Babe Ruth teams entertained Sandwich last week. Both the MV Threshers and Bonitos split their double-headers with the visitors. The Sharks lost both ends of their twin bill.
This weekend the three Island teams will begin a playoff to decide an Island Champion. Saturday, at 5 pm, the Sharks play the Bonitos. Sunday, at 2 pm, the Threshers will tackle Saturday's winning team. At 5 pm the Threshers go against Saturday's losers. The playoffs will continue Tuesday and, if necessary, Thursday.
Boys Lacrosse finale
The Boys Youth Lacrosse teams wrapped up their seasons Sunday at the Falmouth Academy Jamboree.
The Under-15 Shoremen won all three of their games to emerge from the tourney unscathed.
The Under-13 Sharks played four games, winning two, tying one, and losing one.
The Under-11 boys lost to Falmouth, 6-3, and to Lower Cape, 11-2. Donald O'Shaughnessy scored four goals in the losing cause and Sam Rollins scored once. The U-11s then edged Bourne, 8-7 on goals by Donald Shaughnessy (6), Henry Wallace, and Jackson Mahaffey.
Women's softball
The women's softball league will begin play on Tuesday, June 23, and will continue to August. Six of the seven teams will be in action at three venues: Veira Park, Oak Bluffs, the West Tisbury school, and Nunes Field (by the Boys & Girls Club) in Edgartown.
Six of the seven teams that played last year will compete again this year: the Mocha Mott Creamers, Wharf Pub Honeys, Island Entertainment Late Fees, Long and Meehan Snaps. Dairy Queen Swingers, and the Summer Shades Shady Ladies. A new team joins the list: the MacDonald Rug and Carpet Sox.

Summer ice hockey
The Martha's Vineyard Arena will feature girls summer hockey from July 12 to September 6, Sundays at 5 pm.
Play is open to all high school girls, from freshmen to seniors. Eighth-grade girls are also welcome. Registration forms are available at the Arena. The Registration fee is $75.
Also boys
Hockey for boys in eighth grade to seniors in high school will be played at the Arena from July 12 to August 13. Registration forms are available at the Arena. The fee is $150.
Minor League
All eight Minor League teams were in play Saturday with teams closing out their scheduled games.
The Marlins edged the Rays, 12-11.
The Rockies rocked the Reds, 14-4.
The Orioles flew a little higher than the Blue Jays, 10-9 and the Twins got by the Indians, 8-7.
Last Wednesday, the Marlins tightened up the top of the league by besting the Twins, 10-9. The game ended with the bases full of Twins and two outs. The pitch count went to 3 and 2 before Marlins pitcher Sam Cranston tossed a third strike ending the game. The Marlins had ten hits by nine players. Chase Soulagnet gave up just one hit during his time on the mound. Cal Lombardi led the Twins offense with three hits.
In today's first playoff games, the Twins are home to the Orioles at Manter Field and the A's entertain the Mets at Veira Park. Both games start at 5 pm.
Pigskin proclamation
The following is a communiqué from Donald Herman, head coach of the M.V. Regional High School football team.
"Attention any current eighth grader interested in playing football at the high school: On Monday, June 22, the Touchdown Club is holding its "Meet the Coaches Night." This will take place at 5:30 pm in the high school cafeteria. Any student who wants to play high school football should attend.
"However, if you cannot attend, please call Coach Donald Herman at 508-693-1033, ext. 159. Leave the player's name, telephone number, and mailing address."
Skateboard date
Go Skateboarding Day will be celebrated at the MV Skate Park on Sunday, June 21. We are all invited to bring our own BBQ and shop the tag sale from 5 to 7 pm. All proceeds will benefit the park. At dusk skateboarding films will be shown.

Tigers tackle Red Sox
After three and a half innings, Tuesday, the Tigers and Red Sox were tied at three. The Sox had scored their runs in the bottom of the first inning when Tucker McNeely, Jack Slayton, and Mason Jeffers scored driven in on infield hits by Jeff Cimeno and Paul Jeffers-Mayhew and Henry Gallagher's fielder's choice.
The Tigers had single runs in the top of the first, second, and fourth innings. Julia Neville reached with a bunt in the first inning, advanced to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball and scored when Emerson Mahoney bunted safely.
Mitchell Chaves opened the Tigers second inning by beating out a bunt single and was driven in by Keith Cleary. Andrew Wiley smashed a triple to right center but overran the bag at the hot corner and was tagged out. Chaves scored again in the top of the fourth. Leading off the inning with a single up the middle, he went to second on Noah Hoyt's single and scored when Cleary grounded out to second.
Kevin Cleary relieved Silas Berlin on the mound for the Tigers in he top of the third.
The Sox batted around in the bottom of the fourth, posting seven runs.
Chaves led off the top of the fifth with a single into center field and scored on Cleary's infield hit. But that was the extent of the Tiger's offense and the Sox claimed the right to continue in the playoffs, 10-4.
Tucker McNeely and Jack Slayton shared the mound for the Red Sox. The A's and Cardinals had first-round byes.
Come again
In a brief account of the end of the high school sailing team's schedule, it was reported that the team finished the season ranked 10th of 150 registered New England teams. In fact, according to former MVRHS sailing coach Doug Heil, there are 81 registered teams and the Vineyard is not one of them.
In the June 11 edition of The Times, there was an error in the reported results of Training Level Two Junior at the May 31 horse show. Finishing first was Evonne Carey on Forever Young with a score of 67.8.
