Magical realism at Forsythe
Ashley Bostrom, painter and owner of Forsythe Studio Gallery in Edgartown, held her opening reception on Friday, July 3. Family and friends gathered to view the young artist's playful and evocative landscape paintings.
Doug Kent, a West Tisbury painter, hosted an opening reception at his new gallery space Sunday, July 5. The gallery, which overlooks Seth's Pond, shimmered in late afternoon light as attendees perused the exhibit of Mr. Kent's latest paintings and prints. His work, tranquil and dark, explores mythical interpretations of the natural world.
Andrew Magdanz and Susan Shapiro, husband and wife and owners of the Martha's Vineyard Glassworks in West Tisbury, are holding an exhibition featuring their newest glass sculptures. Their work has been displayed in exhibits at The Boston Museum of Fine Arts and The Corning Museum of Glass in New York.
Their upcoming show opens on Sunday, July 12, from 5 to 7 pm and will feature a variety of all-new artwork ranging from hand blown sculptures, free standing and wall-mounted pieces, to sandblasted and painted scenes on hand blown glass vessels.
"I'm showing about ten different sculptures, and Susan will show about four of her pieces," Mr. Magdanz said. "I'm mainly showing sculpted tropical fish, while most of her pieces are painted and carved vases."
The day following the reception, on July 13, Mr. Magdanz will give a glass blowing demonstration. The artists' work will be displayed and on sale for three weeks after the reception. For more information, call 508-693-6026.
