If you're a vegetarian or in the mood for a healthy meal, there are more options than salads at Island restaurants and cafes.
Krista's Gourmet Café, formerly Vineyard Gourmet, offers a yummy veggie wrap with avocado, shredded carrots, cucumbers, mixed greens, goat cheese, red onion, tabouleh, and sprouts wrapped in your choice of wrap -spinach, wheat, herb and garlic, or tomato basil ($6.50).
The Scottish Bakehouse on State Road in Vineyard Haven serves a number of veggie lunch entrees such as a veggie stir-fry, but also worth checking out is the refrigerator full of salads such as beet and spelt (prices vary).
Beetlebung in Vineyard Haven has quite a few vegetarian panino options: the Amherst featrures hummus, fresh baby spinach, tomato, and carrots; the Athena is feta cheese, baby spinach, tomato, with a black olive spread. Both are served on flatbread and cost $5.95.
The Mediterranean Trio at Mediterranean in Oak Bluffs is whipped feta rouille, homemade hummus, and babaganoush, served with sumac crisps or fresh grilled pita bread ($10).
At Le Grenier, find the Vegetarian Wellington, made with broccoli, cauliflower, and carrot paté in a puff pastry.
State Road in West Tisbury offers a Farm to Table Plate: salt crusted fingerling potatoes, radishes and baby carrots served with herb dressing and bagna cauda ($13); and a Vegetable Risotto entrée with fava beans, wild mushrooms, peas, asparagus, and oven tomatoes ($30).
Nicky's in Vineyard Haven has Penne Cacciatore: fresh mushrooms, roasted red peppers and sweet onions sautéed with olive oil and finished with a splash of homemade marinara sauce tossed with penne pasta ($17.95).
Espresso Love offers five veggie sandwiches, including the Powerhouse: havarti cheese, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and sprouts with sundried tomato pesto served on 12-grain bread ($7.49).
Both Waterside Market and Humphreys in Vineyard Haven sell mozzarella, tomato, and basil sandwiches. Waterside's Red, White and Green and is served on fresh-baked ciabatta bread ($10). In Edgartown, Edgartown Pizza serves a wrap version, the Tomato Mozzarella, made with their house pesto and fresh basil, served on multi-grain bread. McPhail's Corner Café's Tomato Mozzarella sandwich is made with imported fresh mozzarella, gourmet vine-ripened tomatoes, and basil pesto ($8.99). Caffe di Lattanzi in Edgartown serves a grilled vegetable and mozzarella panino, the Pinzimonio.
