Women's Softball
The Creamers and the Shady Ladies met at Nunes Field in Edgartown, Tuesday, for a damp but close and well-played softball game.
The Shadies scored twice in the top of the first, but the Creamers responded with four on a Trish Jendrick grand slam in the bottom of the inning.
The Creamers added two in the second to go up 6-2.
But the Shady Ladies scored one in the third and four in the fourth to edge ahead, 7-6.
Not for long. The Creamers tied the score in the bottom of the fourth and added single runs in the fifth and sixth.
Defensive star of the game was Jill Napier, left fielder for the Shady Ladies, who made seven put-outs in the field and threw out a base runner at second.
Creamer pitcher Terri Arenas struck out the side in the sixth, 1-2-3.
The unbeaten Creamers are 3-0 on the season. It was the Shady Ladies' first loss. They stand at 2-1.
At Manter Memorial, the Late Fees defeated the Rug Sox, 9-6, despite Allie Clark's two-run homer in the third for the Sox.
At the West Tisbury school, the Snaps beat the Honeys, 21-14.
Standings: Creamers 3-0, Honeys 2-1, Shady Ladies 2-1, Snaps 2-1, Late Fees 1-2, Rug Sox 1-3, Swingers 0-3.

One pitch softball
Monday's Men's Softball League games produced two double header
splits as the Brewhas beat the Treds in their first game at Manter Memorial, 21-14, and the Treds responded in the second, 14-11.
The newest Brewha, recent MVRHS graduate Nick Billingham, collected four hits - two doubles and two home runs - in the first game.
In the second half of the twin bill, the Treds overcame a 7-5 deficit to pull off a 14-11 win. Tred Neal Maciel hit the longest home run we have seen this season.
The Brewhas have lost five of their last six games. No one can remember the last time that happened - if ever.
Also Monday, at the West Tisbury school, the Stampede and Land Sharks divided the spoils, 11-9 and 18-21. The Stampede impressed early when Josh Burgoyne hit a grand slam in the first inning and Billy Panek, Sean Reed, and Ben Madeiras all homered in the second. Billy's was another slam.
As of Tuesday morning, the Highlanders lead the league with a 9-win, 3-loss record. The Stampede is the only other team with a winning record. The Brewhas are even at 7-7, while the Treds, Land Sharks, and Wildcats are all still in the hunt at 6-8.
We know of no player who likes the one-pitch format, but it works. Teams really do play two games between 6 and 8 pm.
Niantic hoops
In the men's basketball league at Niantic Park, both the Monstars and the Entourage remain undefeated at 3-0.
The Stone Cold Hustlers warmed enough to win another game, and they now stand at 2-1. The High School Ballers, Black Out, and The Future are all 1-2 and the Chips Ahoy are winless after three, 0-3.

Summer icing
The summer hockey season opened Sunday at the MV Arena.
In the high school league the White team defeated the Red, 6-2. Brooks Billingham led the White attack with four goals and Darren Gazaille and Kevin Galligan each added one more. Chris Davies did the damage for Red.
In the second contest the Blacks eclipsed the Gold, 7-1.
Both Colby Gouldrup and Jock Cooperrider had hat tricks.
Josh Naylor also scored for Black.
Dakota Del Viento's goal for the Gold prevented a shut-out.
Two hockey schools are being held at the Arena this summer. The Pro Ambitions Hockey School will be in session from 3 to 5 pm, July 27 to 31. The Greg Carter School will be at the Arena from 9 to 11 am, August 10-13.
Once Bourne

They lost their first game to Mashpee, 7-5, then trounced Falmouth, 21-12. The Islanders scored eight runs in the fifth and added nine in the seventh. Curtis Fournier played long ball with two fence-reaching triples. Jack Sayre collected three hits.
The next victims were from South Plymouth. Jack Slayton's third-inning inside-the-park home run put MV up, 7-0. Mercer Kelly blasted a triple, driving in two. Both Jacob Gunderson and Aidan Aliberti had three hits. Theo Gallagher was key on defense.
In the semi-finals the Islanders got by host Bourne, 6-4, a team that had just earned the regional title. Both Nick Fiore and Jack Sayre had two hits and Shay Sullivan scored a pair of runs. Four pitchers kept Bourne off balance: Liam Weiland, Jack Sayre, Aidan Aliberti, and Will Slayton, allowing only four hits in the six innings.
Playing their third game of the afternoon, the Vineyarders had little left against a Falmouth squad eager to avenge their earlier loss. Final score: Falmouth 14, MV 0. The game was stopped after four innings.
It was the first time a Vineyard team had competed in a tournament for nine-year-olds and they finished in second place.
Bourne officials sent a note commending the Island boys for their play and for their manners.

Reaching the mark
Elie Jordi of the VHYC and Gregory Fligor of EYC round the windward mark in Vineyard Haven Harbor in the Monday-Tuesday Junior Regatta. Gregory finished first and Elie was second in the 59 boat-regatta.
Senior Babe Ruth
Ben Ciciora and Will Stewart kept the Falmouth bats at bay in the first game of a July 15 double-header. Both Ben and Will pitched three innings, giving up a combined total of five hits. The terrible twosome were effective at the plate as well, both going 2-for-3. Anthony Piland's single in the second drove in two runs, giving the Islanders the lead, and Corey Perrota's sac fly gave the Islanders some insurance. Score: M.V. 3, Falmouth 0.
The second game was a mirror image of the first as Stewart continued to shut out Falmouth for five more innings of two-hit ball. He also scored a run and drove in another. Taza Verycrusse relieved Stewart for the final two innings. Score: M.V. 2, Falmouth 0.
Two days later the Islanders took on Bourne with Kendall Chaves hurling five innings of shut-out ball. Chaves helped his own cause by going 3-for-3 with two doubles and three runs batted in. Ciciora had two hits, scored twice and drove in another. M.V. 6, Bourne 0 .
Little League stars
The Vineyard's 12 and under Little League All Stars was one of the ten teams entered in the Rehoboth tournament last weekend. The Islanders made it as far as the tourney's semi-finals before losing to the eventual tourney champions from Dartmouth.
Austin Morley and Mike Mussell divided the pitching duties in the Islanders' first game, a 3-0 shutout of Tiverton, R.I. Both Morley and Mussell delivered 31 pitches to the plate.
Mussell drove in three of the Vineyard's runs with a circuit blast.
The Vineyarders second game was with Dartmouth, who jumped off to an early lead and were up 15-0 after two and a half innings, But in the bottom of the third the never-say-die Vineyarders scored 10 times. Then they added three more to draw within two, 15-13. But that was it. Dartmouth won, 18-13. There were extra base hits by Emerson Mahoney, Austin Morley, Tim Roberts, and Mike Mussell. One of Mussell's was a round-tripper.
The Islanders next game was with Lincoln, R.I., who had to that point allowed only one run to be scored against them. But the Islanders batted around and then some in the first inning, posting seven runs. Tucker McNeely started on the mound for the Vineyard and was relieved by Curtis Farrell. Mike Mussell was 3-for-3 at the plate.
The 11-4 win earned the islanders another shot at Dartmouth in the tournament semi finals. But Dartmouth won again, 8-4. And went on to claim the roses.
The Vineyard's 12 and under All Stars and also the 10 and under All Stars will venture to Nantucket for games on Tuesday, July 28. On Thursday, July 30, Nantucket will visit for games at Veira Park, Oak Bluffs, at 1:15 and 2:30 pm.
