Have you seen the Martha's Vineyard Pinups calendar? Lovely local girls in 1940s poses make a very unusual gift. It's great. It's available at the Devil's Dictionary in town. Partial proceeds benefit the Martha's Vineyard Shellfish Group.
Have you visited the Down Island Farmers Market yet? You will find something new every Tuesday from 11 am to 3 pm through September. Besides fresh vegetables, there are baked goods including quiches, and local artists offer paintings and jewelry. Parking is available right there by the tents, near Mone Insurance at the Tisbury Wharf.
Also at the Tisbury Wharf, the Nantucket Light Ship is available for dockside charter or functions such as weddings. I hope they offer some tours as well. For more information, call the Tisbury Wharf or Bill Golden at 617-821-6771.
Want to celebrate Christmas in July? It's here now. Shop on Saturday for 20 percent off yarn and yard goods, needles and threads, from 10 am to 4 pm at the Heath Hen Yarn & Quilt Shop. Prepare for your holiday projects now. By the way, Lynne Benson is doing very well and looks absolutely marvelous.
A large number of children were gathered on Main Street late Sunday afternoon for the puppet parade. What a wonderful sight. There were dancers and puppets of all shapes and sizes from children with hand puppets to tall puppets on stilts. My favorite was the dragon who bowed his head and flapped mystical wings. Young and old were entranced. To the music of hand bells and a tambourine the puppeteers gathered in the middle of the street, before heading back to the Cornell Theatre, there blocking Spring Street with another adoring crowd.
Kristin Henriksen is the owner of Going Native Nursery. She will lead a free wildflower walk for the M.V. Garden Club in the State Forest at 9 am on Saturday. The walk is called Exploring Drought Tolerant Plants of the State Forest. Meet at the State Forest parking lot on Old County Road, north of the West Tisbury School. Be prepared for insects, sun, and walking. For more, call 508-693-0927.
Congratulations to Lorna Andrade, Marie Araujo, and Carrie Tankard. The NAACP is marking its 100th birthday. In celebration, the Martha's Vineyard Branch will honor these members for their leadership and community service. The party will be at 12 noon next Tuesday at the Grill on Main in Edgartown. Call 508-627-8737 with questions.
Happy anniversary to Lil and Ed Colligan on Tuesday. They've shared their love for 58 years.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out to Lil and Ed's grandson, Thomas E. Colligan, who parties on Saturday. Sunday is a really special day: My darling granddaughter, Rory Mayhew, will turn four years old. Also on Sunday wish the best to Pam Cassel, one of my favorite people, and a very happy birthday to Michael Bulkin. Birthday greetings to Michael Cobban and Nancy Zamarro on Monday.
Heard on Main Street: Wag more. Bark less.
