Good Taste : Rise and shine: Time for breakfast

Whether it's coffee or croissants, Island restaurants offer the opportunity to start the day right with a hearty breakfast. Here is a sampling.

The Fireworks is a fried egg with grilled Black Forest ham and cheddar, and is served on a fresh baked buttermilk biscuit or bagel ($5.25). Or try the State Beach Scramble: farm fresh eggs with portabella mushrooms, arugula, and Mozzarella served with a scallion-garlic potato pancake and toast ($8.75).
Plane View Restaurant's menu includes buttermilk pancakes ($3.95 for three), and specials such as the B52 Bomber: two pancakes, two eggs any style, two sausage links and bacon slices, home fries, toast, and coffee ($6.25). They serve breakfast until 2 pm on Sundays.
Mocha Mott's in Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven is more than a coffee shop. Order bagels, breakfast sandwiches, and breakfast burritos until 11:30 am daily. There is an assortment of fresh bagels to go with sausage, bacon, eggs, and cheese.
In Edgartown, MacPhail's Corner Café makes muffins ($2.59) and bagels ($1.99 with butter or cream cheese) daily. Enjoy bagels with bacon, eggs, and cheese ($4.99).
The ArtCliff Diner serves breakfast until 2 pm. Their menu includes several varieties of crepes, including: Lemon and sugar ($3.50), and Avocado, black bean, and Cabot cheese ($6). Enjoy Island farm eggs in any one of their egg dishes for an extra $.30 per egg.
The Black Dog Tavern's large breakfast menu includes pancakes topped with virtually every fruit desired and dozens of egg dishes. The homemade sausage side dish is a treat worth trying.
Main Street Diner in Edgartown serves breakfast until 12 noon daily, and 1 pm on Sundays. Their house specialty is the Stuffed French Toast: Croissants stuffed with ricotta cheese and a choice of additional toppings ($10.95). Another specialty is the Breakfast Pizza: a crust of eggs topped with cheese, marinara sauce, and three additional toppings ($11.95).
State Road Restaurant's breakfast and lunch café is open daily from 8 am to 2 pm. Breakfast items include the Egg Sandwich: a fried egg and cheddar cheese on toasted multi-grain ($5). Add bacon, sausage, or ham for $1.50 each, or spinach, tomatoes, and shallots for $.50 each. The Breakfast Burrito is made with local eggs, chorizo, cheddar, black beans, salsa, and avocado ($9).
M.V. Bagel Authority in Vineyard Haven sells more than 15 different bagels, including seasonal flavors such as blueberry and pumpkin. They are $.99 each, $8.95 for a baker's dozen ($12 for sliced).
Tropical Restaurant serves Brazilian and American cuisine: the Brazilian Breakfast is white rice, black beans, and eggs any style ($5). Or try a Crab Omelet: crab, asparagus, scallions, mushrooms, and Jack cheese with toast ($7.50).
Beetlebung offers several "Eggwiches": the Original is made with a poached egg, 98 percent fat-free Black Forest ham, and Vermont Cabot cheddar on an English muffin ($3.95). The Green Chile is with flame-roasted New Mexican Green Chiles added to the original ($4.95).
Garcia's Deli and Bakery @ Back Alleys makes breakfast sandwiches with any combination of bacon, ham, sausage, linguica, eggs, a choice of cheese, and vegetables. Prices vary.
