Splash and dash

It was a blustery 18th annual Martha"s Vineyard Oar & Paddle Regatta, Sunday, with 18 to 20 mph winds and gusts to 25. Dana Gaines, a perennial winner at the event said he had never seen such rough weather for the annual event.

Due to the high winds and surf along State Beach, the race, ordinarily half in Sengekontacket Pond and half in Nantucket Sound, was moved entirely into the pond. Starting by the Little Bridge, proceeding past Felix Neck and going counter clockwise around Sarson"s Island, then back to the starting line, the 2.75-mile course was a quarter mile longer than usual.

Times were much slower due to wind, and shoal water, and, of course, the extra length. The last leg was against the wind and a challenge to arms already weary.

Thirty-four people, ranging in age from six to 80-plus, and five dogs participated. Post-race entertainment was provided by guitarist Giancarlo Buscaglia. The refreshing menu included cheeseburgers, hot dogs, iced tea, homemade chocolate chip cookies, and chips.

Kayaks, equipment and staff was provided by Island Spirit Kayak.

Oar & Paddle organizer Chick Stapleton said, "all in all it was a great paddle had by all."

The annual Oar and Paddle Regatta is a benefit for the Friends of Sengekontacket.
