A new season, and the same old wardrobe. With the economy still shaky, most of us might not be in a position to go out and put together a new wardrobe. Not to worry. Instead we can be smart by shaking out last year's favorites and adding a few new pieces or accessories.

Start by stopping by Bryn Walker on Kelley Street in Edgartown or on Main Street in Vineyard Haven. It has a large selection of the most amazing scarves starting at $20. They are a great option to spiff up an old outfit in a flattering way to face and figure and to create an entirely new look. A favorite of mine is the wool three-in-one scarf by Asian Eye ($50). It gives you the option of displaying one of the three various colors separately or twisting it to display all three colors at once

Do you love to wrap up in a blanket to ward off the chill? Why not try their fabulous Bamboo Fleece Jackets that feel like you are in a blanket and looks like you should be on the catwalk. The mid-thigh version is $118 and there is also a longer version ($136) for those who want even more warmth. In solid colors, one jacket is sure to make several outfits seem new.

Another great outfit upgrade is the addition of a colorful or outrageous purse - something everyone will immediately focus on. Stop by Beetlebung Dry Goods in Edgartown, Menemsha, or Vineyard Haven for a beautiful King Ang Purse ($43.50). These colorful hand-crafted organic purses are made using the indigenous tall sea grass from Cambodia.

And then there's Laughing Bear on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs. It offers women everything from shirts to skirts, jewelry to hats. Your biggest challenge will be how to resist walking out with one of everything.

Try one of their new plaid scarves - yes ladies, plaid is back, but in a more feminine style. You could radically change an existing outfit by adding a vest, a wonderful layering trend. The black Willow vest is a great option ($92), as it will go with just about anything and flatter every figure. Pair it with a new decorative wide leather belt ($48) and really make a statement. Finally, add a colorful beret, plain ($30) or sequined ($34).

If, after all this, you still hanker for some major purchases, visit Martha's Closet, a consignment shop in the Tisbury Market Place, and pick something from its large selection of amazing outfits for a fraction of the price. They have everything from Liz Claiborne to the Gap, cashmere to workout clothes, jackets to jewelry. Keep in mind that things change daily, so frequent visits can be advantageous.
