This beautiful fall weather keeps going on and on. If you are like me you are holding your breath waiting for some sort of storm to break the cycle, but so far so good. In the meantime the birds are enjoying my feeders and the many visitors there include nuthatch, chickadees, all varieties of woodpeckers, goldfinches, and entire families of cardinals from parents to small ones. I think the abundance of plant seeds around has kept them coming back. My grandmother would call that cupboard love.
Condolences to the family of Derek Cimeno who died last week. He was the devoted father of Anthony and long-time partner to Patti Bonito. As Tisbury's shellfish warden, he was most generous in sharing his knowledge with the Oak Bluffs School where his son was a student.
It is Sally Foster time at the Oak Bluffs School and last week the Sally Foster packets and catalogs went home. Sally Foster is the PTO's biggest fundraiser of the year. For every dollar sold, the PTO gets $.50. The money raised supports all of the things the PTO does to enrich life at the Oak Bluffs School such as the blue folders that students use every day, homework notebooks for middle school, books for kindergarten kids, a portion of the Fourth Grade Theater Projects, Staff Appreciation Week, the school directory, various events throughout the year, and more. If you are interested in purchasing any of their wrapping paper or merchandise, please contact the school.
September 29 and 30 are the dates when school pictures will be taken. Both the Middle School Homework Club and After School Library return next week for students. This program runs Monday through Thursday from 2:45 to 4 pm. After School Library is for students in grades K-5 and runs for the same days and times as homework club.
And don't forget that on September 27, the eighth grade auction takes place at 5:30 pm at the Sand Bar and Grill in Oak Bluffs.
The Martha's Vineyard Garden Club announces its Beautification Awards. They are given annually to the top five businesses and/or organizations in each town with the most beautifully designed, planted, and maintained window boxes and/or landscaping and up to three honorable mentions. Those businesses in Oak Bluffs receiving the award are: Dragonfly Gallery; Green Eyed Daisy; Jimmy Seas; Madison Inn; Sanctuary; and Circuit House [Honorable Mention]. Thank you to all of them and everyone who takes such pride in the appearance of our town.
The Second Annual Arts and Crafts Sale to benefit Island Senior Housing takes place on October 11. The sale will be held on October 11 from 1 to 4 pm at Woodside Building 2.
There will be a free public concert, "Drops in the Stream," a concert of music, poetry, and dance on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 5:30 pm at the Chilmark Community Center.
The Oak Bluffs Library toddler story time for ages 1.5 to 3 years will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 10:30 am. It will be followed by the preschool story time for children 3 to 5 years old at 11:30 am where the theme will be crocodiles.
On Saturday, Sept. 26, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm, the Children's Book Club for grades two through four will be reading the book "Abby Takes a Stand" by Pat McKissack.
The Oak Bluffs Library will be showing a new DVD release on their large projection screen on Thursday, Oct. 1, from 6 to 7:45 pm. Jamie Foxx and Robert Downy Jr. star in this drama about a homeless street musician.
We send birthday smiles to Dustin Show on September 25, Dennis Rose, Lauren Metell, and Keilla Geddis on the 27th, and Martin Moreis, Raymond Dahill, and Zachary Mathias on the 28th.
Enjoy your week.
Peace.
