This Saturday enjoy the Art of the Derby at the Louisa Gould Gallery. The opening reception is from 5 to 7 pm. At that time you can meet David Kinney, Pulitzer prize-winning author of "The Big One." He came in 2007, staying in Vineyard Haven with the Chapmans, and fished the Derby while researching this book. You should recognize many of your friends and neighbors in it.

Louisa Gould probably won't be attending this opening. Last week, Louisa and J.B. Lamont chose a beautiful weekend for their wedding. Many of their friends and family from afar were pleased to enjoy the sunshine and the festivities. We wish the couple a very happy life together.

Our guests from New Zealand are enjoying the perfect weather this week. Ron and Joan Druett are also reconnecting with friends they met earlier. They are also making use of the fast ferry to New Bedford. I do remember when we could take the steamship to New Bedford or Nantucket with such ease.

Richard Paradise introduces the annual Manhattan Short Film Festival on Saturday. The 10 short films made in 9 different countries will be shown at 7 and 9:30 pm at the Katherine Cornell Theatre. Your vote for the best one will be counted and forwarded to New York City where the winner will be announced the following week.

This Friday is your last chance for the lobster rolls at Grace Church. Without a doubt, this is the best deal you can find. And there are some really terrific pies for sale as well - or just a piece if that strikes your fancy.

Wind farms are in our future. The questions are where and when. Next Tuesday at 7 pm you are invited to hear Peter Cabana present Wind Economics 101. He will begin with the basics of wind-generated electricity. The Vineyard is involved in an historic debate between embracing renewable energy and protecting the Island. There will also be time to discuss the Oceans Management Plan and the Wind Energy Siting Reform Act. These new legislative initiatives put the Vineyard on the front line of the state plan to build large-scale wind farms on land and at sea. This free program is at the library.

The library programs for youngsters are back in full swing. There are numerous activities from Chess Club to Wii Games for teens and for tweens and stories and songs for little ones. Watch our calendar section or call for specifics.

A week from Friday, a variety of free community events will be held in West Tisbury to mark the third annual Living Local Harvest Fest. These celebrations of local food production and renewable energy resources on Island will also be in our calendar.

Happy anniversary to Laurel and Kevin Olson. They celebrate 10 happy years together on Saturday.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Muriel Laverty, Judy Federowicz, Kathy Rogers, and Kenny Davey. Friday belongs to Jeanne Hilton. Happy birthday to Ashleen Marie Dorsey and Eric B. Davison. They celebrate on Sunday. Best wishes go to Julie Immelt for a very special day on Wednesday.
