Derby art
At the Louisa Gould Gallery celebration of the Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby, Brian Kirkpatrick of Oak Bluffs exhibited work in two mediums - hand-decorated cigar boxes and acrylic paintings. Photos by Lynn Christoffers Louisa Gould Gallery held a reception this past Saturday called Sporting Art - Art of the Derby. Featuring works related to fishing and hunting, the exhibit is held annually in conjunction with the Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. David Kinney was there to sign copies of "The Big One," his recently published non-fiction account of the Derby.
Work on display included mounted game fish by Vineyard Haven taxidermist Janet Messineo, fish prints on rice paper by Steve London of Oak Bluffs, decorated cigar boxes and paintings by Brian Kirkpatrick of Oak Bluffs, Jane Fay Baker's fish-themed woodcuts, and fly fishing paintings by Luther Kelley Hall of Connecticut.
Steve London was at Saturday's reception to explain the Japanese printmaking technique he uses to create his primitive-looking art.
Author David Kinney and gallery owner Louisa Gould hosted an event that brings together fine art and fishing.
