"Every year it's a different combination of people, a great eclectic mix," says Laura Coggeshall, the show's co-founder. She and her friend Jackie Brickman started the tradition of the show, held annually on an October weekend.

Ms. Coggeshall and Ms. Brickman are both former employees of the hotel. Both ended up staying at the hotel after they stopped working there, so they could paint on the Island. They became friends with owner Don Glassie, who thought their proposal for an annual art show was "a great idea."

Ms. Coggeshall, who now works at the Yankee Peddler Inn in Newport, R.I., organized this year's exhibit. Ms. Brickman, of Albany, N.Y., painted murals and decorated furniture at the Pequot while working there.

Ms. Coggeshall says she expects a minimum of 10 artists to participate, with the likelihood of last-minute entries adding to the number. Last year some 20 artists, a mix of local residents and summer visitors, participated.

"The mirrors and pictures in the lobby area come down," Ms. Coggeshall says. "We always have a little dinner afterwards at the Pequot. It's our once-a-year get-together."

Among those participating are Julian K. Robinson, who will contribute three or four of his wildlife photographs. Ms. Coggeshall will include her photographs, and Ms. Brickman her paintings.

Others whose work will appear in the show include Mariel Reed of Oak Bluffs, Jennifer Wiggin of Oak Bluffs, and Sheilah Hughes of Vineyard Haven, all of whom will show photographs. Linda Hammond of Oak Bluffs will exhibit paintings, including a portrait of Mr. Robinson. Colleen Farrissey will show her watercolors.

"It feels very local, very Vineyard," says Danielle Zerbonne, who displayed her photographs in the show for two years. "Anyone can do it, and you run into a lot of people you don't see otherwise."

Proceeds from the show, which asks for a $5 donation, will go to support art programs at the Oak Bluffs Library. Last year's exhibit began a tradition of honoring the late Betty Boyd, an artist who had participated for many years. u
