We will miss Madhu Lassiter, who has left her home here. She will be celebrating her birthday on October 24. You can send a card to her at Brighton Gardens, 220 Pleasant Valley Way #346, West Orange, NJ 07052. I know she'd love to hear from her Island friends.

Watch for visitors enjoying a scenic tour of Martha's Vineyard this Saturday. These bicyclists are supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Martha's Vineyard and other charities of the Rotary Club. I expect that they will also be admiring the views.

Saturday's bake sale at Cronig's will support homeless animals on the Island. The group will host a holiday sale at 18 Firehouse Lane in Oak Bluffs on Sunday. They are also collecting for a yard sale at the end of the month. All proceeds are used for food, medical, or any needs of the animals in their care. Call 508-696-8509 for more.

Sunday is the 18th annual CROP Walk. Sponsor forms are still available at any place of worship, the high school, or from the Vineyard Committee on Hunger. The goal is to raise $20,000 for Church World Service/CROP Walk. This will help feed the hungry in 80 nations, including the U.S. Our food pantry will receive one fourth of the amount raised on Sunday.

Anyone can walk, for all or any part of the distance. The walk leaves promptly at 2 pm from St. Augustine's church in Vineyard Haven and goes to Trinity Methodist Church in the Campground and back. Walk it all or any part thereof. Register by 1:40 pm.

This weekend is the mini book sale at our library, both Saturday and Sunday. We've heard from a number of our neighbors who are very happy that the library will be open on Sundays again this winter.

Island author and conservationist William Marks invites you to share "water stories" at the library on Tuesday evening at 7 pm. He says that he has learned in his world travels that every person has a water story. He will offer a few new ones as well.

Tuesday morning the very little ones will sing with Ellen Hoffman at the library. Children five and older are invited to a special performance of mime Robert Rivest on Wednesday at 1 pm.

Our library offers a lot of activities for school children. A week from Tuesday, the 27th, is a short day at the Tisbury School and those age six and older can see a free movie with popcorn at 1 pm. Also on Wednesday, Oct. 28, there's a free movie at 3 pm for ages eight and older. And, they can enjoy games from 1 to 2:30 pm on Thursday, Oct. 29, another short day at the school.

Gardeners, take note: You are invited to the fall meeting of the Martha's Vineyard Garden Club next Tuesday at 1 pm at the Wakeman Center in Lambert's Cove. Chuck Wiley of Vineyard Gardens Nursery will talk about "Putting the Garden to Bed." Everyone interested in gardening and conservation is invited. Fee for guests is $5.

Do you want to learn more about the Nantucket Lightship in our harbor? Owner Bill Golden will give a brief history of lightships and this one in particular a week from today. You can meet him next Thursday at 5:30 pm at the Martha's Vineyard Museum in Edgartown.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out on Sunday to Barbara Donald. Jeff Serusa parties on Tuesday. Happy birthday greetings go to Dylan Jacobs on Wednesday. It was nice to see him last Sunday, escorting his mom around town on a beautiful afternoon.

Heard on Main Street: Trying to stop the offshore turbines is a lot like tilting at windmills.
