Many return to the Island today and tomorrow to celebrate Thanksgiving. After a filling meal with family and a good night's sleep, now it's time to catch up with your friends. Breakfast anyone?
In addition to breakfast, lunch, and brunch items, State Road Restaurant in North Tisbury offers a wide variety of pastries, cakes, and cookies, including limpopos - soft, sugary brioche doughnuts. Photo by Susan Safford If you've been away for awhile, you may not know that Menemsha Café is still open for breakfast. If you've come from New York and are already homesick, enjoy H&H New York Bagels with butter, plain, or veggie cream cheese ($1.95-$2.85); or try the Breakfast Club Sandwich: three eggs, two layers of cheese, served on three pieces of English muffin ($6.50), with any or all of the following toppings: all natural nitrite free bacon, ham, or sausage ($4.50), spinach, tomato, or onions ($1.50), and avocado ($1.50).
Also new this season is State Road Restaurant, which serves breakfast every day except Mondays and Tuesdays, and offers brunch specials on Saturday and Sundays. Enjoy breakfast items such as a burrito (local eggs scrambled with chorizo, cheddar, black beans, salsa, avocado, with sour cream and salsa, $9), or The Islander (fried egg sandwich with two local eggs, cheddar, spinach, tomato, shallots and ham, bacon, or house-made sausage on a toasted rustic roll, $5) from 9 am to 2 pm (9 am to 1 pm on Thanksgiving).
Slice of Life in Oak Bluffs offers a list of fried egg breakfast sandwiches on bagels or fresh baked buttermilk biscuits, such as the Tivoli: with tomatoes, arugula, and Cheddar; or the Fireworks: with grilled Black Forest ham and cheddar; both are $5.25.
Linda Jean's in Oak Bluffs continues to please diners with their daily breakfasts where you can get just about anything. Favorites include the Fresh Country Omelet (three eggs, corned beef hash, onions, American cheese, with home fries, toast, and coffee, $8.99), and the Jacob (home fries with onion, tomato, broccoli, spinach, and cheddar cheese, $6.99).
Stop by the ArtCliff Diner in Vineyard Haven for your favorite sweet or savory crepe, or one of their many daily specials. The diner is open Thanksgiving morning at 7 am, and remains open throughout the weekend, until 2 pm.
On Thanksgiving, The Black Dog Tavern is open for breakfast only, from 7 am to 12 noon. Their menu includes breakfast burritos, several styles of pancakes, and healthy egg scrambles. Their regular hours are Monday through Saturday, 7 to 11 am, and Sunday brunch from 7 am to 2 pm.
Beetlebung features great espresso and "eggwiches" such as the Green Chile: a poached egg, flame roasted green chile from New Mexico, 96-percent fat-free Black Forest ham, and Vermont cheddar on a English muffin.
At the airport, the Plane View Restaurant's open floor plan allows for large groups as well as small tables for two by the many windows. They are open on Thanksgiving from 7 am to 12 noon. Regular hours resume on Friday, which are 7 am to 11:30 am Monday through Saturday, and 7 am to 2 pm on Sunday.
Dock Street in Edgartown is a genuine local gathering place, with its bar and stools running the length of the restaurant. Enjoy breakfast staples such as French toast, bacon and eggs, and omelets.
And get your favorite muffins, scones, cookies, and breakfast sandwiches from Espresso Love. They are open on Thanksgiving from 6:30 am to 12 noon, and resume normal business hours on Friday.
So treat yourself to a weekend of eating after airline delays, long car rides through traffic, and the boat ride. u
