We hope this Thanksgiving day brings you a time to enjoy the company of family and friends and those you love best. Please remember those who might be spending the day alone, and invite them to share your home and meals with you.
The members of the Friends of the Oak Bluffs Council On Aging are conducting a week-long fundraising event to provide children on the Island or off-Island with a phone call from Santa during the week of December 14-18, from 4 to 7 pm in the evening. Parents or grandparents who want to bring this joyful moment to their special child or children should come to the senior center by Wednesday, Dec. 10, to speak to Rose, to fill out an information sheet for each child to be called, and to pay the $5 charge for each child. The Friends group financially supports the Sr. Center with programs and items not covered in the OBCOA annual budget.
The Annual 5K for KJ will take place on Saturday, Nov. 28, at the M.V. Regional High School. This 5K race is run in memory of Kevin Johnson to raise money for the scholarship in Kevin's name. It will start at 11 am. Registration is from 8:30 to 10:30 am on the day of the race.
Barb and Bo Fehl have added three grandchildren to their family tree this year. Robert Shane was born in Maryland on February 16, Fiona Skye was born in Oregon on September 5, and Makana Gordon was born on November 8. Barb and Bo feel very blessed.
There will be a screening of "The Wizard of Oz" at the Capawock Theatre on Friday, Nov. 27, at 2 pm. Admission is one non-perishable canned good for the Island Food Pantry.
The Oak Bluffs Public Library will be closed on Wednesday, Dec. 2, for a staff training and development day.
On Thursday, Dec. 3, from 6 to 8 pm the movie night at the Oak Bluffs Library will star Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in a romantic comedy about a book editor trying to avoid deportation. Rated PG-13. Popcorn and beverages will be served. Please contact the library to learn the movie title.
We send birthday smiles to Nora Jardin and Bill Anderson, Jr. on November 26, Lauren Metell and Keilla Gedds on the 27th, and Yvonne Ponte, Cayla Morris, and Roxann Klein on the 28th.
This Thanksgiving will be a somewhat somber one for our family. On November 17 my mother-in-law Elizabeth Alley died at the age of 97. We are comforted by the fact that she was still able, with her extended family's support, to live in the house on Vineyard Avenue that she had lived in since her marriage. So this week, while missing her presence, we will be thankful for the many years she graced our Thanksgiving table.
Enjoy your week.
Peace.
