Spoon in the Moon
Coffee and live local music creates a low-key and laid-back setting that's perfect for the Spoon in the Moon coffeehouse at the Vineyard Playhouse. Tomorrow, Dec. 4, enjoy music in Vineyard Haven from Nancy Jephcote's new album, "Garland of Rain." She will be joined by Brian Weiland and Paul Thurlow. Terror in the woods
"Antichrist," (rated R), a 2009 horror film directed by Lars von Trier, plays at the Capawock Theatre on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 4 and 7 pm. Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe, the plot is about a couple who, after the death of their son, retreat to a cabin settled deep in the woods and quickly begin to encounter strange and terrifying occurrences. The film was first shown at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, where Charlotte Gainsbourg won the 2009 Best Actress award.
Shop till you stop
Starting today and continuing every Thursday through December 17, prime shopping time in Tisbury will be extended to help you find holiday specials, raffles, treats, music, and more. Sponsored by the Tisbury Business Association, Twilight Thursdays run all day until 7 pm, and 8 pm on December 17. On the 17th, you can visit with Santa and listen to carols by the Minnesingers, starting at 3 pm.
Community Center bazaar
Shop the soon-to-be-bustling Chilmark Community Center this weekend for the Holiday Happening bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9 am to 2:30 pm. Browse through table arrangements of antiques, jewelry, books, church bargains, Ethel's Jams & Jellies, linens, and much more. Lunch and desserts will also be available. The Oak Bluffs Association presents the 2009 Oak Bluffs Santa Sweepstakes. Every time you purchase something at the more than 30 stores and restaurants, from Craftworks to Seasons Eatery and Pub, enter your name to win one of 60 prizes. The raffle closes on December 21.
Raffle for readers
The Edgartown Library is raffling off three gift baskets: one for the mystery/adventure reader, one for the romantic, and one for children, and also two original pieces of art by Donna Blackburn, and P.G. Gravelle. Tickets are $1 each, or six for $5. Winners will be chosen at 4:45 pm on Saturday, Dec. 12, during Christmas in Edgartown.
Montessori holiday bake sale
Join the Vineyard Montessori School for its annual holiday bake sale to benefit the Red Stocking Fund. The students will use the proceeds to purchase toys that will be distributed to Island families through the fund. To participate in the effort, bring individually wrapped baked goods along with a description of ingredients on Friday, Dec. 4. The bake sale is Saturday, Dec. 5, at 10 am in front of Timeless Treasures in Vineyard Haven.
There is a new support group for those with relatives, spouses, or significant others suffering from a mental illness, such as bipolar disorder and depression, among others, at Daybreak Clubhouse. Hosted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Massachusetts, the course meets on the first Sunday of each month from 6 to 7:30 pm at the clubhouse, located at 457B State Road, beginning Sunday, Dec. 6. Women Empowered offers a microloan program for Island women who need a loan up to $1,500 for their business or professional development. Funded by Malcolm Jones of West Tisbury, loan applications are due in December, and are available by calling Shelia Bracy at 508-696-8880 or emailing email@example.com.
Thanksgiving arts and crafts
The Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury was filled last weekend with tables and displays of work by more than 80 Island artists, craftspeople, and artisans for the 14th annual Vineyard Artisans Thanksgiving Day Festival. Artists such as John Holladay, Washington Ledesma, Daniel Waters, Carol Tripp, and Margot Datz showed their paintings, ceramics, photographs, fiber art, and much more.
The Vineyard Artisans Festival's second annual Holiday Festival will be Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 am to 4 pm at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury.
Winner, winner, scallop dinner
Friends of the Tisbury Council on Aging announcing the winners of the third annual Bay Scallop Raffle, held at the Tisbury Senior Center's holiday bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 28:

Before it is finalized on December 10, The Martha's Vineyard Commission will hold a public hearing on the Island Plan on Thursday, Dec. 3 at 7:30 pm at the Martha's Vineyard Commission offices, 33 New York Avenue, Oak Bluffs.

Thanksgiving events abounded on the Island, beginning last Wednesday with Grace Preschool's Turkey Run, and ending on Sunday with the Thanksgiving Artisans Festival, and many more in between. The annual Turkey Trot 5K road race on Thanksgiving morning raised approximately $1,500 for heating fuel for elderly Island residents, and the sold out Blu-ray screening of "The Wizard of Oz" at the Capawock Theatre brought in approximately 11 milk crates of food for the Island Food Pantry.
