Spirit of Vineyard honors the Wortmans
Hospice of Martha's Vineyard has selected Denys and Marilyn Wortman as the 12th annual Spirit of the Vineyard Award winners. A breakfast will be held in their honor tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 4, at 8:30 am in the Culinary Arts Dining Room of Martha's Vineyard Regional High School.
While working for the town of Edgartown in human resources and parks and recreation, Marilyn Wortman also serves on the board of YMCA of Martha's Vineyard. "I've been part of the Y my whole life," she said, "I relied on it growing up in West Hartford."
She is a trustee of the Vineyard Haven Library and chairman of fundraising for the Island Community Chorus. Ms. Wortman is also Vineyard Haven's vice president in the Lagoon Pond Association.
As treasurer of the MV Hospital Auxiliary, she oversees the Tree of Lights campaign. After three years as treasurer of the Garden Club, she created a Garden Club scholarship for a graduating MVRHS senior. And for nine years she has served as the linen lady at the Community Services Thrift Shop. Describing herself as a "big worker rather than a big donor," Marilyn was in charge of the Edgartown Affordable Housing Committee's Morgan Woods project and a member of the Chamber Music Society.
Denys Wortman, one of four individuals who created Martha's Vineyard Community Television (MVTV), serves as its president. He is a board member of Featherstone Center for the Arts and Tisbury Waterways Inc. A former Tisbury selectman, he served two terms on the town's finance and advisory board, and formed the Tashmoo Spring Building Restoration Committee.
The Wortmans host fundraisers for many organizations at their Hines Point home.
