Achievements
The FARM Institute in Edgartown received a $1,800 grant from the Staples Foundation for Learning, created by Staples, Inc.
Alannah N. Ledford of Vineyard Haven earned a high school diploma equivalency from the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges.
Ashley Ledford of Vineyard Haven, currently a student at Curry College in Plymouth, has received a scholarship, based on academic standing, from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
Richard Paradise, founder of the Martha's Vineyard Film Festival, was recently awarded the 2009 International Film Festival Summit's award for best regional film festival director in the U.S. The award ceremony was held this past weekend in Las Vegas.
The following students recently completed the Coast Guard 100-ton captains course, offered by Massachusetts Maritime Academy following 80 hours of classroom work: Mark Mattison, Erik Gilley, Richard Kelly, John Cronin, Jeff LaMarche, William Thomas Miller, Steve Sjogren, Stavros Viglas, Janice Brown, and Mark Begle.
Scott Maciel of Vineyard Haven has been awarded a Deerpath Academic Scholarship from Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Ill., based on his strong record of achievement in a challenging program of study.

Izabella V. Lopes
Reni Martins and Rones Lopes of Oak Bluffs announce the birth of their daughter, Izabella Vitoria Martins Messias Lopes, on December 1, at Martha's Vineyard Hospital. Izabella weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces.
Willa B. Johnson
Beth and John Johnson of Tisbury announce the birth of their daughter, Willa Beth Johnson, on December 3, at Martha's Vineyard Hospital. Willa weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces, and joins siblings Cooper, Connor, Maggie, Hanni, Cully, and Katie. Her grandparents are Marion Mudge of Tisbury, and Bal and Jen McClure of Oak Bluffs.
Engagements
Kathryn McGovern and Michael Dowling
Kathryn McGovern and Michael Dowling have become engaged. Kathryn is the daughter of Maryellen and Joseph McGovern of Narragansett, Rhode Island. Michael is the son of Jeanne and Douglas Dowling of Vineyard Haven. A summer 2010 wedding is planned.
