Winter snowstorm blankets Vineyard
Published: December 24, 2009
The weather outside was frightful, but the snow, arriving as it did six days before Christmas, was delightful.
Late Saturday night a northeaster barreled up the East Coast and walloped the Island. At the height of the storm wind gusts hit 60 miles per hour. Almost 12 inches of snow fell across the Island with deeper amounts reported.
Sunday morning ferries were cancelled and there were reports of scattered power outages across the Island as the storm pulled away.
In the aftermath of the first doozy of a snowstorm of the season, Island children hopped on their sleds and parents broke out the shovels.
The snow also transformed the barren winter landscape into a series of snow-draped scenes captured by Island photographers.
