And so the old year is fast fading to the past and we look with expectation towards 2010. This year has bought many changes to our world, country, and towns; some of them for the better and some not so. Perhaps now is the time to reevaluate what seems important to us and be satisfied with how fortunate we are. We here can still walk our streets in safety and express our opinions without fear of reprisal. Make a resolution to extend friendship and help to those who are hurting and share out talents wherever they are needed.
The First Congregational Church of West Tisbury is beginning their annual Community Suppers series in January, a great place to connect with Island neighbors and friends. Suppers are held every Wednesday from January 6 through the end of March, 2010. Dinner is served promptly at 5:30 pm. If you can, please bring a side dish to add to the bounty. For more information, call the church office at 508-693-2842 weekdays from 9 am to 1 pm VTA buses 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 all stop close to the church. Please bring a neighbor in need.
The Library Toddler Story Time on Wednesday, Jan. 6, will have a winter theme. Come and have fun, read, sing, and develop early literacy skills at this program that runs from 10:30 until 11:30 am. At 11:30, the preschool story time designed for ages 3 to 5 will start.
We send birthday smiles to Jen Jenkinson and Michelle Bettencourt on January 2; Nola Mavro, Chris Alley, and Nicole deBettencourt on the next day; Kate Feiffer and Jules BenDavid on January 5; and Michael Araujo and Patricia Costa on January 6.
Word has been received here of the death of former Oak Bluffs resident Mary Nunes. Mary has resided in Florida for the past 50 years, but she had worked in the Oak Bluffs Tax Office while living in Oak Bluffs. She leaves her husband Ray Ross, and was pre-deceased by her brothers Eddie and Joseph Nunes.
As the year is ending we still remember those who left us this year but still are part of our memories. They are James Cleary - postal worker, father, and grandfather; Donald Gregory - joyful businessman, husband, father, and grandfather; Gerri Correllus - former owner of Tony's Market, beloved wife, grandmother, great grandmother; Jena Pothier - dear daughter, sister, athlete, and friend to so many; John Swan - cook extraordinaire, husband, father, and long-time volunteer coach for youth sports; Bill Norton - for more than 50 years a volunteer fireman and deputy chief, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Betty Lou Norton - loved wife, mother, and grandmother; Derek Cimino - shellfish warden, husband, and caring father; Bideau Abbot - beloved mother, sister, courageous lady; Elizabeth Alley - much loved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many; and Charlene Radcliffe - beloved sister, and always smiling friend.
May this New Year bring all that you hoped for.
Peace.
