Good Taste : It's about pizza time

Most people have their favorite couple of pizza places, whether they're ordering a slice for themselves or a few pies for a party. But with the amount of pizza places that remain open year-round, maybe it's time to try something different.

In Edgartown, there are five places open now. Edgartown Pizza, near the triangle, offers small (10"), large (14"), and extra large (16") pizzas in combos such as Vineyard Veggie: Spinach, broccoli, artichoke, and mushrooms ($10.95, $16.95, $18.95); and Island Combo: Red peppers, garlic, sausage, pineapple, and bacon ($12.70, $18.95, $19.95). A large cheese is $10.95; $2.25 for a slice of cheese.

Lattanzi's Pizzeria specializes in thin crust pizzas. Favorites include Salsiccia e Spinachi: Italian sausage, garlic, spinach, and tomato ($18.95); and Primavera: fresh vegetables, tomato sauce, and mozzarella ($18.95).

At The Fresh Pasta Shoppe, find the hefty Meat Lovers or Double Cheeseburger pizzas, both $13.50/small, and18.50/large. A plain cheese pie is $8/small or $11/large; and slices are $2.50.

The Pizza Place, at the former Sandwich Haven location, boasts daily specials that include price reductions, free toppings, and a lunch special that gets you two slices and a soda for $5. A large plain cheese pie is $12.95; slices are $2.25. Other menu items include the House Special Pizza: loaded with onions, green peppers, sausage, mushrooms, olives, anchovies, pepperoni, linguiça, and hamburger ($14.95).

The Main Street Diner serves pizza after 5:30 pm, not available for takeout. A 16" mozzarella pizza, made from the Pasquarella family traditional recipe with Italian plum tomatoes, Romano cheese, basil, and olive oil, is $13.50; extra toppings range from $3 to $3.50.

In Oak Bluffs, the Ocean View serves pizza daily from 5 to 11 pm. A cheese pie is $11.99. Toppings vary from $1 to $1.25 each, and include pepperoni, pesto, garlic, and olives. A deluxe pizza is $14.99.

Offshore Ale Co. makes all kinds of pizzas, such as the Roma (tomatoes, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese for $16.95), Barbeque Chicken (honey BBQ sauce base with chicken breast, bacon, sautéed onions, scallions, mozzarella for $18.95); and Potato Pizza (garlic oil base with house-mashed potatoes, bacon, scallions, with a blend of cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses, also for $18.95).

And Paesan's, at the end of Circuit Avenue, offers slices for $2.50; plain cheese pie for $12.25; specialty pizzas such as the White Pizza: alfredo sauce and Parmesan for $12.50, and a slew of others.

In Vineyard Haven, Rocco's in the Tisbury Marketplace serves plain cheese pizzas for $12.95 and slices for $2.50. If you have an Island Club card, take 20 percent off your second pie. Their specialty pies include Chicken Cutlet: breaded white chicken and tomato ($16.95); and Ham, Egg, and Onion: with mozzarella and tomato sauce ($15.95). Extra toppings are $1.

Beetlebung's Personal Cheese Pizzas are 8.5 inches and come in several varieties, such as plain, with all natural mozzarella, cheddar, and imported tomato cheeses and tomato sauce ($6.95); Napa, with chicken sausage, mushrooms, and sweet onions ($9.95); and Kalamata, with crumbled feta cheese, baby spinach, imported Greek Kalamata olives, and purple onion ($9.95).

And on Sunday evenings in West Tisbury, State Road Restaurant's Sunday Table menu includes a variety of pizzas every week. Recent offerings include Local Tomato: with basil, ricotta, and Parmesan ($12); Serrano Ham Roasted Squash Pizza: with arugula and Parmesan ($12); and Sliced Prime Rib Pizza: with mushrooms, grilled red onion, and Fontina ($14).
