Karen Flynn, also known as Karen from the Bite, called to make me and all of you aware of the Ecumenical Prayer Service tonight at 6 at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown. For those who like to sing, please arrive at 5:30 pm to practice singing the "Papa Nou" (Our Father) in Haitian Creole. If you would like to take part (a prayer, poem, song, dance, etc.) contact the Reverend Jerry Fritz at 508-627-4421 or email him an email at jftfc@verizon.net.
Looking for something to do this weekend? It is the final show in the winter series titled Family. Film. Feast. organized by the Martha's Vineyard Film Festival. Make your way to the Chilmark Community Center (CCC) on Saturday, Jan. 30, for "A New You!" It is a compilation of short films by various directors from Canada, Iran, U.S., Latvia, U.K., Italy, and Germany, which runs for 76 minutes. The time to arrive is 5 pm in order to enjoy dinner prepared by our own Amy Miller and music performed by Rick Bausman. Rick, Drum Workshop extraordinaire, will provide some lively music along with students from the Chilmark School. Dinner, as always, is $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Movie tickets are available at the door for $6. Big thanks go out to Lindsey Scott, Director of Children's Programs for the M.V. Film Festival, for all of her hard work along with her team of experts.
Other news coming at you from the CCC is provided by Mathea Morais. Summer 2010 will be Mathea's second year as executive director of the center's summer program. The center is now advertising for summer help. Applications are available at chilmarkcommunitycenter.org and, if you are interested, they are due back by March 19.
The town is looking for an administrative assistant to the Fire Chief. It is a grade six step one position, which requires a five- to seven-hour commitment each week. There is a strong in-house candidate, but if you are interested, contact the Selectmen's Office at 508-645-2101. Applications are due February 12.
Speaking of our fire chief, David reminds us that from now until May 1 you can obtain permission to burn brush if you follow these two simple steps: 1. Please call David Norton at home 508-645-2819 at 7 am on the day you seek permission to burn. 2. Wait to actually speak to him as leaving a message on his machine doesn't count. Between today and February 9 please follow the same procedure, however, contact Assistant Chief Tim Carroll at 508-645-3159. If you are unable to reach them at home, please call the Cross Road Station at 508-645-2550. David also reminds us that burn permits are only issued for the burning of brush during what he refers to as "ideal atmospheric conditions." Leaves, stumps, and construction debris do not belong in your burn pile.
Tomorrow at 7 pm is Family Friday Night Movies at the Chilmark Library.
"Freedom Writers," starring Hilary Swank and Patrick Dempsey, tells the story of un-teachable teens that discover the power of tolerance, reclaim their shattered lives and change their world. As always, free admission, popcorn, and juice are provided by the Friends of the Chilmark Public Library. If you have questions please call 508-645-3360.
Bella Thorpe has aged another year. She celebrated her seventh birthday with multiple parties surrounded by friends and family. Her kid party was bunny themed with a bunny cake, a puppet show, a variation on the all-time classic Pin the Tail on the Donkey called stick the tail on the bunny, bunny craft projects, bunny decorations and, in the middle of it all, was a real live bunny. Milkshake, Bella's black and white bunny, took center stage and was a real trooper during the two hours of true loving that he received. Happy birthday Miss Bella.
Also celebrating this week is Bette Carroll who doesn't look like she could possibly be 87 on the 30th. We all know how Bette loves to be surrounded by family, friends, and music so that is precisely how she will celebrate. Perhaps there may be a little cake in the mix, too.
Bette's son Emmett celebrates his birthday on Groundhog Day along with fellow Menemsha fisherman, John Larsen. Colin Hickey also celebrates as does young Linden MacLeod. Linden will be a whole year old on February 3. Happy, happy to you my dear sweet girl. A few more belated birthday wishes go out to Charlotte Scott, Laila Fenner, and Kerry Taylor.
Welcome home to Delilah Oliver, whose body decided to get sick enough to be transported by Med Flight to Boston this past week. We are all thankful the adorable girl with the bouncing curly locks is home and on the mend. Life does manage to throw us curveballs sometimes.
