(Food maven Eleni Collins is on vacation this week. A substitute chowhound has taken on the task, but don't worry, Eleni returns next week.)

Maybe you want breakfast, one of those sensational burritos or a pastry. Maybe it's lunch, a Pilgrim and chowder. Maybe it's an after work cookie. Or maybe it's just coffee.

Maybe you want to read the newspaper old style or, God forbid, read it online. Maybe you want to play online poker with an Internet table full of card sharks from Timbuktu. Maybe you want to read your email and check out your eHarmony contacts. It doesn't matter. What you always want is a relaxed, comfortable place to be.

The Black Dog State Road Café is the place. Overstuffed chairs, amiable seating arrangements, pictures of ships and steam engines on the walls, and the coffee keeps coming.

Rainy, snowy February afternoons are made for the café's spacious seating area, its wood-burning Franklin stove, and its workbench for the dedicated computer geeks among us. Dining tables, bakery display cases, order taking and registers are separate. Beyond all this, the comfy seating is just right for pointless conversation, nurturing new acquaintances, or soliciting that initial $10 million in start-up money for the new business venture you have in mind.

Plus, there are those apple fritters.

Good Deals

The Grill in Edgartown warms up winter and speeds spring along with two for one entrees on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Not to be missed.

At Lattanzi's fine dining at the Edgartown restaurant is finer than ever with buy one, get one free entrees. It's not a matter of who's treating on Friday or Saturday. Lattanzi's is treating.

David Ryans knows what the work-a-day Vineyarder needs in February. It's an after-work special - terrific burgers for $5 and Rolling Rock Drafts for $2.50. No better way to unwind.

It's lobster night on Wednesday ($15.99) and roast prime rib on Saturday ($17.99) at the Ocean View. And, if that's not enough to get you moving in the right direction, how about 30th Anniversary Roll-back prices (Monday through Saturday, dine-in only). Good burgers and salads that will recall your salad days.
