Mediterranean Restaurant
Oak Bluffs
Chef Doug Hewson of Vineyard Haven, formerly of Boston, owns Mediterranean Restaurant with his wife Leslie. Self-proclaimed wash-ashores, they moved to the Island in 1998. In 2003, the couple took over Louis's in Vineyard Haven. In 2004, they began Mediterranean Restaurant on the harbor in Vineyard Haven. Last spring, they moved their restaurant to the space that once housed Lola's in Oak Bluffs.
Currently, Mediterranean is open Wednesday through Sunday from 5 pm. Enjoy two-for-one light meals on Wednesdays and Sundays, $2 tapas every night, and a salsa dance party on Saturdays at 8:30 pm, with DJ Jose. And if you're an Island Club Card member, get two-for-one entrees every night through March.
Eleni: What ingredients could you not live without?
Doug: Ursa and maras. They're peppers that come from Turkey.
What's one of your favorite things to cook?
Haloumi (A cheese from Cyprus that is traditionally fried.)
What's one food you won't eat?
I've gotta say I'm not partial to raw bananas. Banana bread is fine, banana muffins are fine, but not just bananas.
Where do you go out to eat yourself?
Home.
What's one of your favorite things about the Island?
Winter, because it's quiet.
