Nina Violet comes home
Home from a winter tour, singer-songwriter Nina Violet of Vineyard Haven and her band are back at Che's Lounge this Friday, March 19. Gifted with a dreamy, wistful voice, Nina has been writing songs from an early age. Her lyrics have a delirious quality that haunts the imagination for days. Accompanying Nina (center) are five Vineyard companions of stage and studio: guitarist Adam Howell (at rear), trumpeter/keyboardist Angel Russell (right), vocalist/percussionist Marciana Jones (left), and bassist Matthew Cullen and drummer Andrew Prouty (not shown). Seniors show at Featherstone
Last Sunday, four seniors from the M.V. Regional High School showed their artwork at an opening at Featherstone Center for the Arts. Melanie Krauss, Hannah Marlin, Abby Entner, and Seneca Craig - students of Janice Frame - displayed paintings, drawings, photographs, and ceramics. The show runs through Friday, March 19.
The last of the three consecutive student shows begins Sunday, March 21, with an opening reception from 4 to 6 pm. The show, Paper and Pottery IV, featuring students of both Ms. Frame and Scott Campbell, runs through March 26.
One Acts continue
Island Theatre Workshop's One Act Plays Festival continues this weekend at the Katharine Cornell Theatre. "Trial By Jury," "The Man Who Couldn't Stop Crying," and "Shasta Rue" will be staged on Friday and Saturday, March 19 and 20, at 7:30 pm, with a matinee on Sunday, March 21, at 3 pm. Chock-full of fun
Bring a cake and get a free walk at the West Tisbury School cakewalk. The second annual West Tisbury fundraiser for the third grade class is this Saturday, March 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Enjoy the fun at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury, along with games, face painting, arts and crafts, and prizes. Chili, corn chowder, hot dogs, and cupcakes will be available.
Also on Saturday, the West Tisbury second grade class will hold a yard sale fundraiser. The family yard and bake sale will be in the West Tisbury School auditorium, rain or shine, from 10 am to 3 pm. For more information about either event, call 508-696-0362.
Top-blogger visits M.V. Women's Network
The Martha's Vineyard Women's Network continues its monthly meetings this coming Tuesday, March 23, with a presentation by well-known blogger (chrisbrogan.com) and social networking guru Chris Brogan. Co-author of "Trust Agents" and president of New Marketing Labs, Mr. Brogan works with mid-sized and large companies to improve online business communication.
He'll speak from 7:30 to 9 am in the Baylies Room at the Old Whaling Church, on Finding Gold on the Internet. Admission is $25 at the door and for non-members, and $15 when you pre-register before March 20. For more information, visit mvwomensnetwork.org.
Prepare to be square
The Gay Head Baptist Church, the oldest continuously operating Native American church in the country, is having a fundraising square dance at the Aquinnah Town Hall on Saturday, March 20, from 7 to 10 pm. The dance features The Flying Elbows and the Black Brook Singers. Suggested donation is $10 per person, and $15 per couple. Children under 17 are free. Refreshments will be served.
