Our crocuses are in bloom. Leaving the house the other day, my son stopped at the top of the walkway and said, "Hey Mom! Look at this!" He was pointing to the green shoots with the purple buds that had been slowly coming up the past couple of weeks. It is so heartening to see some green again and to watch things grow.
I guess I have to stop kidding myself that spring is really far away and start actively planning that garden I've been thinking about all winter. Spring - what a welcome change from the cold and grey of winter. The nice days we had last week seemed to lift everyone up and give us a much-needed jolt of warmth and light. And, how great is it that it is light out past 5 pm?
The Easter egg hunt at the Duck Inn will be Sunday April 4, at 1 pm. If you want to help decorate eggs, come by this Saturday, March 27, or next Saturday, April 3, at 2 pm. And if you can't make it to decorate, come to search for eggs on Easter. It is so much fun watching all the little Easter bunnies of Aquinnah look for eggs and treats. Special prizes are given for whoever finds the silver and gold eggs.
Lights Out Martha's Vineyard is happening this Saturday night from 8:30 to 9:30 pm so turn out the lights, turn off the computer and the TV, light up the fire and the candles and save a little electricity. You know the drill; you do it whenever the power goes out, only this time it's for a cause. Look at vineyardconservation.org for all the details.
Wendy Weldon and James Langlois will be having a two-person exhibit at the Chilmark Library opening Saturday, April 3, with a reception from 3 to 5 pm. The exhibit of Wendy's paintings and James's drawings will run through April 29, 2010.
There is a vacancy on the Personnel Board; the Aquinnah Board of Selectmen is now accepting applications. You can submit a letter of interest to aqbos@comcast .net or mail it to Board of Selectmen 65 State Rd. Aquinnah, MA 02535. Letters must be submitted by April 5, 2010. For more information call 508-645-2300.
Happy Birthday to Lauri Bradway whose birthday was last week. Nanawe Vanderhoop turned 10 this past Tuesday; she was probably acting like a teenager by Wednesday. Albert and Linda Fischer celebrated 22 years of marriage on March 20. They were married on the first day of spring during a snowstorm.
Lisa Vanderhoop is very excited for the first episode of Life on the Discovery Channel; it looks similar to Planet Earth. Lisa used to work in environmental filmmaking, so on Sunday at 8 pm she will be curled up on the couch watching Life unfold on her TV.
