James Flight Alley died May 15 in West Tisbury, the town he loved and where he was a model of a successful small-town businessman and politician. His burial will be Friday at 11 am at the West Tisbury cemetery on State Road. A gathering will be held in September (on a day and time to be announced) to remember Jim and tell stories about his colorful life.

Linda Marinelli, who for years cut a wide swath across the community and political landscape of Oak Bluffs as an outspoken citizen, selectman and member of town school, finance, and health boards, died Thursday, January 31, 2013 in Falmouth. She was 81.

Sheryl Lyn Cunningham, also known through two previous marriages as Sheri Gilpin or Sheri Wright, succumbed to a long-standing illness on February 4, 2012. She was 49.

Nelson W. Potter

Nelson W. Potter, 70, of Chilmark, died on January 23, 2013, in Cambridge, after a courageous four-year battle with metastatic prostate cancer. Nelson was cared for at home with the help of Hospice and passed quietly with his wife, Pauline, and their adult children, Corey and Christopher, nearby.

She was a graduate of Kent School, Kent CT. After high school, Karen attended University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Katherine Gibbs School, and McGill University. Karen worked for the American Red Cross and in her later years worked at Morning Glory Farm in Edgartown.

Oliver Hazard Perry, best known on Martha's Vineyard as "Johnny Seaview," a man with a song and a story for every occasion who spontaneously dispensed flowers to ladies he came across from a bouquet he often gathered with the same free spirit that marked his life, died on December 12, 2012, in the Glen Ridge Nursing Center in Malden, where he had spent the last months of his life battling cancer. He was 84.

Olive G. Allan died quite unexpectedly at age 97 Friday morning, August 10, in Maryview Medical Center, near her home of recent years in Portsmouth, Virginia. Olive was born on April 8, 1915 in Riverside, Rhode Island, to Clifford and Ica (Emmett) Williams, and was proud of her heritage as a 9th-generation direct descendant of Roger Williams, founder of Providence, Rhode Island Colony, and the Baptist Church in America. Roger Williams's most significant legacy is as the progenitor of religious freedom in the original 13 colonies, and as an individualistic thinker who believed in genuine democracy and the dignity of all religions and Native Americans (who revered him), long before those views were widely held in the colonies. This independently minded heritage was greatly influential to Olive in life.

Gladys A. Widdiss, whose life spanned the transformation of the town of Gay Head from a poor, rural community to a wealthy, summer resort renamed Aquinnah, and who helped lead the Wampanoag Tribe's fight for federal recognition, died Wednesday morning, June 13, at Martha's Vineyard Hospital. She was 97.

Florence A. "Floss" Dove died at her home in Vineyard Haven on December 22 at the age of 96. She was born in Washington, D.C., on November 24, 1915, the daughter of Lois Strickler and Clyde Blaine Asher. She married Gardner Dove when she was 20 and was introduced to Martha's Vineyard soon after. They raised their family in Washington. In 1969 she and Gardner moved to St. Croix in the Virgin Islands where they lived for seven years.

Elizabeth Muriel Cole Frieh, 93, died January 11, with her family at her bedside. The daughter of Lucretia and Veranus Cole, Libby was born on June 11, 1918 in Providence, R.I., but lived most of her life on Martha's Vineyard. She worked as assistant town clerk in Tisbury until she became a full-time homemaker. She found love later in life, married Eugene Frieh, and raised five children.

John W. Mayhew

John W. Mayhew, beloved husband, father, grandfather, WWII Navy fighter pilot, West Tisbury town father, fisherman, teacher and friend, died at Martha's Vineyard Hospital on January 10. He died in the early morning hours, around the time he would rise to go fishing years ago. His family says it imagines that is where he has gone. He was 91 years old and had lived at Windemere Nursing Home since 2008.

Albert L. Cohn, a prominent and prolific New Jersey litigator for almost 60 years who exemplified the old-fashioned generalist in an age of legal specialization, died on December 27. He was 83 and lived in West Orange, N.J., and Chilmark.

Herbert James Jr.

Herbert "Jesse" James Jr. died on November 8, 2011, at Martha's Vineyard Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 64.
Jesse "retired" in 2006 from the Boston and Maine Railroad after 37 years, although he never really retired. He always wanted to stay active and spent the last five years working for Martha's Vineyard Regional School System. Jesse's passion was driving his "kids" and other passengers on his bus. Jesse was very active in the community and involved with the Masons, Shriners, Lions Club and others. Toys for Tots had a special place in heart. Jesse was born in Arlington and spent his youth in Sudbury, graduating from Lincoln Sudbury Regional High school in 1964. He spent most of his adulthood in Montague.
Jesse leaves behind his loving wife of 43 years, Kathryn (Costello) James, and six children: Herbert III of Montague, Kathryn Zarpus of Virginia Beach, Michelle Hamilton of Turners Falls, Gabrielle James of Boston, Dawne Forrester of New York, and Nicole James of Vermont. He also left behind 17 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; three brothers and two sisters; and many loving extended family and friends.

Edward Roland Hammond Jr. died after a long illness, at Mount Greylock Nursing Home in Pittsfield, on September 22. He was 77.

Jerome "Buddy" Healy, 81, died on September 9 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. An obituary was published in the September 15 issue of The Times, but the photograph of Buddy was inadvertently omitted.

Anita Parker

Anita Parker of Oak Bluffs died on September 9 after a brief battle with cancer. Anita died at her home surrounded by her family. For the past 11 years Anita has been a smiling presence behind the circulation desk at the Oak Bluffs Public Library, where she continued to work throughout the summer until just days before her illness took her.

Christopher P. Rupe

Christopher Peter Rupe died on September 14 on Martha's Vineyard after a long illness. He was born January 4, 1972, in Ann Arbor, Mich., to Pamela Phillips and Jeffrey Rupe (deceased). In 1981 he moved with his family to Massachusetts and graduated from Concord Carlisle High School in 1990. He completed his Bachelor of Music at the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1998.

A ceremony to bury the cremains of Herbert Isaacs will he held at 12 noon on Wednesday, September 21, at Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven. Mr. Isaacs died on July 14, and his obituary appeared in the July 21 edition of The Times.

Long-time resident of Martha's Vineyard Adelburt E. "Buddy" Thurber Jr. died on August 24, 2011, after a sudden recurrence of cancer. He was 68.

Helen "Hellcat" Lamb, founder of Camp Jabberwocky, the Martha's Vineyard Cerebral Palsy Camp, died at her home in Oak Bluffs Friday, Aug. 26, on the eve of her 97th birthday.

D. Bruce Keep Jr. of West Tisbury died on Wednesday, August 25, 2011 at the Martha's Vineyard Hospital. He was 84.

Keith E. Graves

Keith Elliot Graves, 57, of Holyoke and formerly of Martha's Vineyard, died at Holyoke Medical Center on August 23, 2011. Keith was born in Springfield, the son of Robert L. Graves of Vineyard Haven and the late Shirley Hinson Graves. Keith was educated in the Springfield public schools and went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps.
Keith loved the outdoors; he was an avid fisherman, hunter, and outdoorsman. He cherished the many years he lived on Martha's Vineyard enjoying the full value of the island life. Keith had a very warm and giving heart and always reached out to help others less fortunate.
He leaves a daughter, Kai Graves of Springfield, a son, Bryan Graves also of Springfield, and two grandchildren, Aiden Graves and Madigan Graves of Springfield.

Michelle Laurie died peacefully on July 1, 2011, following a courageous battle against brain cancer.

Hazel Wald Hunt, who spent her childhood summers in North Tisbury and who leaves five first cousins on the Vineyard, died on August 20 in Lucca, Italy, of heart failure. She was 68 and had been in ill health for some time. She leaves a brother, Godfrey G. Day, in Falmouth.

Adelburt E. "Buddy" Thurber, 68, of Oak Bluffs died on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at the Falmouth Hospital. He was the husband of Susan S. Thurber and the father of Christopher Thurber. He was also the son of Leona (Smith) White and brother of Antone White.

Preston W. Averill

Preston Willoughby Averill Sr. (aka "Dad," "Bumpa," "Grampy," "Grandpa," "Uncle Preston") died peacefully at his home in Vineyard Haven on Friday, August 12, with his wife, Gerry, at his side. The fifth of seven children, he was born to Alfred and Ada Willoughby Averill on December 31 in 1916 in Edgartown.

Dr. Sumner Yaffe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 9, 1923 and died peacefully at the age of 88 in his home in Los Angeles on August 10, 2011. An internationally recognized researcher and advocate, he is considered the "Father of Pediatric Pharmacology."

Dad was rather humble and didn't like a big fuss. I can see him shaking his head over all this obituary business. Before the last stages of his decline I would read him cards people sent or relay messages from people who sang his praises and, honest to God, he blushed, "oh, geez, that's a bit much, don't you think!"

Edward "Ted" Windsor Farrow died on July 15 of a massive head injury as a result of a fall. He was born in Rochester, N.Y., the eldest son of Edward Samuel Farrow and Ruth Wilson Farrow. He graduated from Exeter Academy, Williams College, and studied architecture at M.I.T.

Master Sgt. Benjamin A. Stevenson of Canyon Lake, Texas, died on July 21 in Paktika Province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with small-arms fire. He was 36.

Bill, as he was known to his friends, was born in the original Martha's Vineyard Hospital with severe cerebral palsy. Billy was a familiar figure as he traveled around Oak Bluffs, first on his three-wheeled bike and later on a motorized scooter.
