Obituary : Alton L. Wareham
Dr. Alton L. Wareham, age 88, died on February 21. Mr. Wareham was a lifelong Harlem, N.Y., resident and summer resident of Martha's Vineyard. He predeceased his wife of 66 years, Helene.
Al "Doc" Wareham was a practicing dentist, outstanding basketball player with the Harlem YMCA, sports and jazz enthusiast, and a proud graduate of Lincoln and Howard Universities.
He is survived by his two children, Lynn Howell and Roger Wareham; two sisters, Carmine Wareham and Mildred McGee; grandchildren Taiwo and Kehinde Howell, Rahsaan and Naima Wareham; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his private dental practice, "Doc" worked at Harlem Hospital for 45 years. A viewing and funeral service were held on Friday, February 27, at St. James Presbyterian Church in Harlem, N.Y.
