Sturgis E. Entwistle of Vineyard Haven died on April 15 at age 88, at Massachusetts General Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Sturgis was a life-long Islander born in Vineyard Haven, August 27, 1920, to J. William and Jetta Entwistle.

He attended Tabor Academy in Marion. After leaving the academy he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served during World War II in Panama. After the war he returned to the Vineyard to do woodworking. He worked for Hariph Hancock for a number of years, and later became a self-employed woodworker, working on furniture and other custom projects. He enjoyed sailing when younger, and began carving birds and whales in his later years, which he enjoyed very much. He liked the challenge of new or unusual projects.

Sturgis is survived by his wife Barbara; son Dean Entwistle of Dallastown, Penn.; daughter Kristy Erickson of Carlisle; grandchildren Jenna and Justin Entwistle and Kelsey and Shayna Erickson; sister Jetta Schaffer of Duxbury; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Channing L. Entwistle.

Visiting hours will be from 1 to 2 pm on Saturday, May 16 at Chapman, Cole, and Gleason Funeral Home, located on Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road in Oak Bluffs. A graveside service will follow at the West Tisbury Cemetery.
