Michael Gregory Salhany of Vineyard Haven and Stowe died Wednesday, August 4, of heart failure. He was born in Montreal, Canada on June 23, 1947. Michael was raised and remained in Montreal until graduating from Concordia University in 1970, where he received a degree in advanced mathematics.

Michael G. Salhany, Martha's Vineyard

Known to Cecily and his Vineyard family by his French Canadian name, Michel, some of his favorite memories included large skiing expeditions to the Laurentians with a myriad of cousins, aunts, and uncles of all ages on skis, happy Christmases on Mont Blanc, and starlit treks on skis to meet neighbors carrying lanterns on the slopes for light.

He was a northern child by nature who had only recently adapted to sea level. His love for the Vineyard waters and marshes was growing in direct response to a gentler age.

Michel became a U.S. citizen while working for CSX railroad in Jacksonville, Fla. in the 1980s. Later he worked for EMC Corporation as a software development engineer in Hopkinton.

He and his wife, Cecily, had recently bought a house in Vineyard Haven where they planned to explore and enjoy the cove in their canoes.

Michel is survived by Cecily, her son Joshua, his sons Alex and Mark, his brother Gary Salhany and his wife, Joan, of Ontario, the Hull and Beecher clan of West Tisbury, and far too many of his wondrous and large Canadian family to list, all of whom brought a great light to his all too short life.

A service will take place in Montreal at a date to be announced.
