Jean E. (Costa) Gomes of New Bedford died on September 21, suddenly. A funeral was held on September 26 at Boulevard Funeral home on Ashley Boulevard, and burial was at St. John's Cemetery in New Bedford. She was the widow of John P. Gomes and was predeceased by a son, Shawn Gomes.

Jean Elizabeth was born in Oak Bluffs on November 28, 1935 to Gene A. Costa and Alberta (Allard) Costa. She grew up and attended the Oak Bluffs School. Jean graduated from the Oak Bluffs High School Class of 1953. Jean grew up in a close-knit community and loving family. She was the first child born and being a girl, was adored by her 10 uncles.

Jean was always known as Jean E. and would remind you if you forgot the E.

After graduation Jean moved to New Bedford and met and married John P. Gomes. They had six children. She is survived by her children Timothy, Robin (Gomes) Voisine, Pamela (Gomes) Martin, Tammy Gomes, Rebecca Gomes, all of New Bedford.

She is also survived by a sister Elaine (Costa) Carroll of Vineyard Haven; grandchildren Jason Martin, Wayne Martin, Harry Parsons 3rd, Sterling Gomes, and great-grandchildren Jay Lynn Martin and Kameron Parsons; nephew Michael Thomas Carroll, his wife Carol and family, of Vineyard Haven, and Elizabeth (Carroll) Fraim and her husband, Jeffrey, of West Palm Beach, Fla.

She is also survived by three cousins who live in Oak Bluffs - Patricia A. Costa, Virginia C. Hall and Lillian Anderson.

Jean will be remembered by her family and friends both on and off Island as easy going and friendly person who loved cross-word puzzles and was know for her beautiful penmanship.

A memorial service will be held on Island at a later date.

Contributions may be made in Jean's memory at a charity of one's choice.
