Obituary : Carl W. Tiedt

Mr. Carl W. Tiedt, 88, of Vineyard Haven and Saugus, died on Sunday, Oct. 4, at his home in Vineyard Haven. He was the husband of the late Helen "Betty" (Paul) Tiedt.

Born in St. Joseph, Mo., he was the son of the late Charles and Etta (Hynes) Tiedt and lived in Saugus for more than 40 years before moving to Vineyard Haven two years ago.

Mr. Tiedt was an active member of the U.S. Navy for 20 years, serving in both World War II and the Korean Conflict, and was stationed in Newport, R.I., at the end of his active service. He was in the Naval Reserves for an additional 10 years, retiring with the rank of Chief Boatswain's Mate in 1970.

Mr. Tiedt worked at Necco in the Maintenance/Air Conditioning Refrigeration Department. He was a member of the Cliftondale Congregational Church and the William Sutton Masonic Lodge in Saugus for many years. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite of Newport, R.I.

Mr. Tiedt is survived by his daughter, Helen A. Anderson and her husband, John, of Vineyard Haven; granddaughter Elizabeth Anderson of Maine; brothers Jerry Tiedt, Charles Tiedt; sisters Louise Woody and Doris Tiedt, all of Missouri. He was predeceased by his son Carl W. Tiedt, brother Irving Tiedt, and sister Dorothy Begley.

A funeral service will be held in the Bisbee-Porcella Funeral Home, located at 549 Lincoln Ave., in Saugus this Friday, Oct. 9 at 11 am. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Thursday, Oct. 8, from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm. Interment is at the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody.
