Obituary : Henry Corey
Henry Corey, 88, of Oak Bluffs and Falmouth, died February 27 at Royal Nursing Center. He was the husband of Patricia (Kiley) Corey for 57 years. Born in Oak Bluffs, he was the son of Frank and Emma (Janovic) Corey.
Mr. Corey was a veteran of the United States Army, having served as a medic assigned to the 47th Field Hospital during WWII. Mr. Corey was in Normandy, France, in 1944 as well as taking part in the Battle of the Bulge. He was then honorably discharged in 1945.
Mr. Corey graduated with a B.A. degree from Columbia University in 1943. He then graduated from Fordham Law School in 1949, being admitted to the Mass Bar in the same year. He conducted a private practice of law on Martha's Vineyard for more than 50 years.
Mr. Corey and the late John W. Osborne co-founded the Dukes County Savings Bank on April 15, 1955, now Martha's Vineyard Savings Bank and the Bank of Woods Hole, where he was a trustee/officer until his death.
A lifelong member of the VFW, DAV and also the American Legion, he was dedicated to the recognition of service people in the local community.
An avid jogger, Mr. Corey won several Martha's Vineyard Road Races well into his late seventies. While living in Falmouth the last five years, Mr. Corey enjoyed volunteering at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He also liked to take long walks around Falmouth Harbor with his family.
Besides his wife, other survivors include his son, Sean J. Corey of Falmouth, his wife Kristin and grandchildren, Owen, Alexandra, and Aidan. Also, a daughter Kathleen Lynch of Bethpage, N.Y., her husband William, and grandchildren Marisol, Emma, and Liam.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass at St. Patrick's Church in Falmouth on Friday, March 5, at 10 am. A burial will follow with military honors at 1 pm in Oak Grove Cemetery, Oak Bluffs. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the VFW, MV Post, 9261, P. O. Box 1437 Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
