Richie Roy went back, back, back — tracking a long ball in the Treds vs. Stampede game. Richie fell magnificently before reaching the homerun fence. His many friends were pleased to learn he was not hurt. Only his dignity was wounded. Photo by Ralph StewartFans expecting a close, well-played softball game early Monday evening at Tisbury's Veterans Memorial Park, as the Hurricanes and Brewhas faced off in the final game of their scheduled summer season, were disappointed as the high-scoring Brewhas managed only one run and that in the bottom of the first inning.

Photo by Ralph StewartThe 'Canes on the other hand were ready and willing to take advantage of their listless opponents. They scored three in the top of the first, six in the fourth, and three more in the sixth inning. Final score: Hurricanes 12, Brewhas 1.
Last Thursday the Brewhas beat the Wildcats, 8-6. John Custer and Eric Hatt homered for the Brewhas.
Monday's second game was a runaway win for the Treds outscoring the Stampede 16-6. The Treds wasted no time in asserting their claim, driving in seven runs in the top of the first inning. The loudest blow was a fence-clearing home run by Billy Panek.
The Stampede made a move toward catching up. After posting four runs in the bottom of the fourth, the score stood at Treds 8, Stampede 6. But that was it. The Treds added four in the fifth and two more in both the sixth and seventh while holding the Stampede in check.
The third game of the trifecta was a triumph for the Catboat Killers over the Wildcats. The score was tied, 3-3 after three innings, but the Catboats crossed the plate ten times in the bottom of the fourth, then scored three in the fifth and sixth, enough to keep the Wildcats at bay.

Final score: Catboat Killers 19, Wildcats 15.
Also Monday, at Manters Memorial Field, West Tisbury, the Highlanders were showing no mercy, drubbing the Landsharks, 20-4.

Women to begin softball second season
Tuesday, at Veterans War Memorial Park, in a game where the defense outshone the offense, the Shady Ladies shaded the Honeys, 3-2. The Ladies scored one run in the top of the first inning. That was it until the Honeys tied the score with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Griffen Hughes answered by driving in two for the Shady Ladies in the top of the seventh to make it 3-1. The Honeys got one back in their half but no more.

little league
The 12-year-old Vineyard Little League all star travel team visited Cooperstown, N.Y., last weekend, taking in the sights at the Baseball Hall of Fame and playing the national pastime on several of the manicured Little League fields, including one modeled on Fenway Park, complete with a green monster in left field. Four of the Vineyarders were awarded green shirts for hitting balls over the mini-monster: Silas Berlin, Tucker McNeely, Isaac Higgins and Emily Turney. Emily was the only girl in any of the games in which the Vineyard played.
The Islanders were 0 for 7 but made a good showing, especially in an extra-inning game with a team from Wisconsin.
This weekend the team of 12-year-old youngsters is entered in a tournament at Bourne, scheduled to play Medfield, Braintree, and the host team.
