The MVRHS boys varsity ice hockey team took more shots on goal (24-19)
than the visitors from Hanover did, but the Indians won the game,
6-3.
Jordan Hoehn started the scoring, assisted by Finn Briggs, at 2:45
in the first period. But Hanovers Tim Kaplan responded with
two for the tribe.
The second period was the Vineyards downfall as Hanover scored
two unanswered goals and took a 4-1 lead.
Both teams scored twice in the third period. Scott Maciel, with
help from Stephen Greenberg and Nick Townes, at 8:31, and Jordan
Hoehn, assisted by Townes and Maciel, at 10:52.
Freshman Alex Minnehan was in goal and made 20 saves.
There was only one penalty called in the game and that on Hanover
in the second period.
Tie D-Y
The purple puck-chasers took full advantage of Dennis Yarmouth malefactions,
scoring two power play goals in the final four minutes, one with
a two-man advantage, and tied the game, 4-4.
The Dolphins posted their first goal just a minute into the contest.
At 7:33 Nick Townes tied the score, taking a perfect pass from Scott
Maciel and lifting the puck over the D-Y goalies shoulder
on the short side. With 17 seconds on the clock the Dolphins 11th
shot on goal eluded MV goalie Eli Bonnell.
The Islanders play moved up to another level in the second
period. Passes were quicker and more accurate. Checking was harder
and there was more of it. Most of the action moved to the Dolphins
end of the ice. The only goal of the period was painted purple by
Steve Greenberg with help from Pat Smadbeck. The MV defense limited
Dolphin shots on goal to three, The Islanders had eight.
The third period began on a down note as Billy St. George scored
his second goal of the game a 1:32. Eight minutes later, Matt Kenline
made it 4-2 with his second goal of the evening.
With little more than four minutes left on the clock, DY left the
door ajar with two penalties. With a 5-3 skater advantage, Co-Captain
Jordan Hoehn, who quite literally had climbed out of a sick bed
to play, made it 3-4, assisted by Townes and Maciel. Still on a
power play, now with a one-man edge, Co-Captain Mike Giordano sent
a rebound through a crowd into the net. Maciel and Townes were credited
with assists again.
MV Goalie Eli Bonnell made 22 saves.
Jayvees are swamped
In an earlier game, the MV junior varsity allowed just one goal
in the first period; then three more in the second. But in the third
term the roof fell in, and the junior Dolphins found the back of
the net five times. Final score: D-Y 9, MV 1.
The Vineyard goal was scored by Ken Maciel in the third period.
The Tisbury
bench erupted when the buzzer sounded signaling the teamıs
first victory: Julie Pringle, Gillian O'Callaghan, Tova Katzman,
Lauren McLane, Larissa Casique, Sofia Hart, Coach Sue Canhem,
Rachel Pires, and Ashleen Catarelli.

Lanni Phillips of West Tisbury pushes past Tisbury's Madelaine
Penicaud, Thursday, to snag the ball in the season's final
game. Tisbury won in OT, 32-30.

Interscholstics
reach playoffs
Final boys standings:
Edgartown 7-1
Oak Bluffs 6-2
West Tisbury 5-3
Tisbury 3-5
Charter coed 0-8
The interscholastic basketball second-season playoffs began Friday
with the Tisbury Tigers boys team defeating the Charter school five,
53-43. Lucas Pisano was high scorer for Tisbury with 13 points.
Charters Andrew McHugh had the game high 17.
The Edgartown Eagles boys and girls basketball teams finished the
season of home-and-home games in first place, followed by the Oak
Bluffs boys and the West Tisbury girls.
In Tuesdays boys playoff round, Tisbury gave Edgartown a tussle
at Edgartown. They led at the half, then ran into foul trouble in
the second period, losing two starters and finally the game, 64-55.
As close as that game was, it paled in comparison to the double-overtime
Hawks vs. Blazers scramble at Oak Bluffs.
At the half, West Tisbury held a commanding 18-11 lead, primarily
due to the scoring drives of Nick Gross. He had 10 of the WT points.
After the break the Hawks fell in a hole and did not score for eight
minutes, opening the door for OB. Tad Golds bucket tied the
score at 5:15. A half minute later Gold put the Blazers ahead, 20-18.
In the minutes remaining, Gross got hot again, dropped four of four
from the foul line and added four more with layups, and OB found
themselves down by six with three minutes to go. Franklin Taylor
scored on a rebound. Foul shots by Taylor and Gold made it a two-point
game, and with 22 seconds left on the clock James Todd sank a 10
footer, tying the score.
OB drew first blood in the four minute OT on a pop by Gold. Alex
Pooles hoop tied it for WT. Jess Swaringens layup and
foul shot put OB up by three. Taylor sank a freebie and Poole hit
from just inside the arch with five seconds left: 33-33.
In the second OT Matt Flynn took charge for the Hawks. He snagged
the tip-off and raced in for a layup. Moments later he stole the
ball and netted another. After Gross dropped one of two from the
charity stripe, Flynn scored his third of the second OT, pushing
the Hawks total to 40.
But the Blazers were not twiddling thumbs. Swaringen scored a running
right hander. Todd added a hoop, as did Billy Reagan. When Taylor
scored with a minute and a half to go, OB was ahead to stay. In
the final minute Taylor and Gold hit four foul shots, icing the
cake, 45-40.
Oak Bluffs and Edgartown will meet in the finals today.
Final girls standings:
Edgartown 5-1
West Tisbury 4-2
Oak Bluffs 2-4
Tisbury 1-5

Bluffs.
