All Stars

Andy Farrissey, Mike Montanile, and Mike Shea, all seniors, were chosen by the Cape Cod Times for spots on the 31-man all-star football team. Tristan Atwood, Nathan Larsen, and John Swan earned honorable mention. Falmouth led the field with six picks.

Tony Grillo was an easy choice for the CCT 12-player all-star golf team. Barnstable (17-0-1) placed three on the dream team, but Tony was the only one described as a “freshman sensation.” He won the Francis Ouimet Invitational and the PGA Junior tournament held on the Island. Nick Wallen and Jacques Penicaud were honorably mentioned.

Isabelle Lew and Ashley Rebello were chosen for the CCT 21-member field hockey team. Harwich led with four girls on the all star squad.

Kathryn DeBettencourt, Sarah Greenberg, and Brie Sylvia were mentioned with honor.

The CCT failed to name a Vineyarder to its all-star girls soccer team, but did find Taylor MacDonald, Alaina Aristide, and Katherine Clark worthy of honorable mention. Sandwich and Falmouth, both champions in their leagues, placed three on the 16-player team.

Lucas Brewer and Eric Herman made it to the 22-man star-studded C&I boys soccer team, and Finn Briggs, Ben Post, Chris Post, and Duncan Pickard were all mentioned. Bourne and Chatham led with three all stars each.

Dart season ends, begins

In the final night of the MV Dart League fall-winter season, Thursday, Jan. 6, Steve Maciel, Kurt Tesch, and Charlene Barbosa were the big winners, drubbing Rene Mathieu, Bill Frizzell, and Kevin Goudy, 9-2.

But the season’s guerdon went to Steve Furtaw, Joe Blais, and Peter Valentzas.

Fred Pekari, Steve Maciel, Kurt Tesch, and Charlene Barbosa were second. Charlene Alley, Peter Searle, and Mike Lipinsky were third.

Individual honors belonged to Dirk Higdon for the most singles, 11. Steve Furtaw had the most tons, 34, and the best 3-dart-out, 115.

Don Welty had the top 3-dart-on, 120. Both Fred Pekari and Brenda Denham hit a ton 80.

The Dart League winter-spring second season begins Tuesday, Jan. 25, and Thursday, Jan. 27, at 7:30 pm.

Sign up at the PA Club’s new building Tuesday or Thursday, Jan 18 or 20, from 7 to 7:30 pm.

Sam’s ma’ams win

The MVRHS varsity girls ice hockey team won its second game of the season, Wednesday, shutting out North Quincy at the MV Arena, 3-0.

Melani Dickson broke the ice four minutes into the game assisted by Katherine Clark and Kerry O’Donoghue. Twelve seconds later Adrian Aristide beat Red Raider goalie Berberan, unassisted.

The game’s final goal was Alaina Aristide’s, 12 minutes into the second period.

North Quincy kept MV goalie Jen Ward busy making 30-plus saves.

Saturday the girls played at undefeated, division-one Canton and lost 7-1. The Cantonese scored in each period, 3-2-2. MV’s goal was by Jenny Murphy, assisted by Adrian Aristide and Meryl Pye.

No one was counting, but Coach Sherman figures Jen Ward made at least 50 saves.

The Islanders (2-4-1) have a challenging weekend ahead. They are at Sandwich on Friday, at Barnstable on Saturday, and host Duxbury here Monday at 1 pm.

The junior varsity girls visit Tabor Academy, Saturday, and are home to Austin Prep on Monday at 2:30.

Legends win

John Van Putten played his first game of the year in a Legend uniform and the Legends posted their first win of the season, defeating the Patriots, 99-95. We will not say it was cause and effect, but certainly it didn’t hurt.

Brian Scott (38) and David Perez (21) scored more than half of the Legends points, and Julius Middleton led all in rebounds.

Damon Mello paced the Pat’s attack with 29 points and pulled down a dozen rebounds in his best effort of the year. Sandy Fisher had 20, and Teejay Roginski 14.

In the nightcap, the Timberwolves kept their record clean with a 114-94 win over the Lakers. Asil Cash had the game high with 34. Chris Joyce added 17, Harrison Holmes 15, Chuck Downing 14, and John Blau 10.

Lakers in double digits were Heath Estrella 26, Albie Robinson 24, Jeff LaBell 18, Karl Kallinich 14.

Youth hockey

Three MVYH games were played at the MV Arena last weekend, resulting in a win, a tie, and a loss.

The Squirt A squad blanked Lower Cape, Sunday, 7-0. Jordi Abrams, Shay Hill, and Kyp Cooperrider all scored twice; Kyle Francis had the other goal. Assists were credited to Chris Morris (2), Harrison Rodriguez, Shay Hill and Kyp Cooperrider. Goalies Zoie Clark and Mike Sylvia shared shutout honors. The Islanders took 44 shots on goal to Lower Cape’s 10.

The Bantam A’s took a 2-0 lead over Sandwich in the first period on goals by Jason Schwab and Darren Gazaille, both assisted by Colin Hurd. Gazaille scored unassisted in the second frame, but the visitors scored four times to go ahead, 4-3. The only goal in the final period was Scott Cleary’s, tying the count to 4-4.

Michael Capen tended the MV net.

The Nantucket Bantams arrived in style in three chartered planes, bringing a new goalie and a larger team than the Vineyarders had previously faced. The Whalers claimed their first win of the season, 2-0. It was the MV Bantam Yankees’ first loss. MV outshot Nantucket 27-15, but could not find a way around the new Whaler goalie.

Zachary Waller was in the Vineyard net.

Strikes & spares

Weekly ten-pin bowling for high-school-aged young people and seniors at least 55 years old is offered free of charge by the M.V. Prevention Committee (MVPC) at the Trade Center lanes in Falmouth for eight weeks in February and March.
