Half
marathons
The 2005 new England Tri-State Half Marathon Championship Series begins
Feb. 27 at Hyannis. Races will also be run May 7 at Alton Bay, N.H.
and Oct. 3 in Maine.
Last year, 22 persons ran all three races and each received a nylon
pullover with embroidered logo.
The 04 Hyannis race attracted 1,255 long-distance runners including
Islanders Bill Brown, Kathy OSullivan, Gail Voyer, and Kristine
Cammorata,
Josh Sohn, who wins more than his share of summer races on the Vineyard,
ran the Hyannis in 1:12:13 and finished third.
One up, three down
The MVRHS boys varsity ice hockey team played its best game of the
season, according to Coach Matt Mincone, and shut out D-Y at Dennis,
Monday, 3-0.
The Dolphins outshot the Islanders, 11-8 in the first period, but
after that the MV defensive game plan limited D-Y to four shots on
goal per period.
Nick Townes scored an unassisted goal two and a half minutes into
the contest which proved to be all that was needed for the win as
Freshman Alex Minnehan stopped all 19 D-Y shots on his goal.
Townes scored again midway through the second period, assisted by
Jordan Hoehn, and Steven Greenberg provided a third point at 12:45
with help from Scott Maciel.
Neither team scored in the third frame.
MV ended with 24 shots on goal to D-Ys 19.
Saturdays game at the Arena with Mansfield was a travesty that
took two hours and 20 minutes to play. Thirty-five penalties were
called, 18 on Mansfield, 17 on the Vineyard.
The Hornets led after one, 3-2. MV took a 5-4 lead after two. But
Mansfield did all of the scoring in the final period to take the 8-5
win.
Purple points were scored by Jordan Hoehn (2), Mike Giordano, Finn
Briggs, and Scott Maciel, with assists by Townes, Briggs, Giordano
(2), Hoehn, Maciel and Greenberg.
MV took 34 shots on goal to the Hornets 28.
Last Wednesday the Islanders lost to Bourne, 5-1, then bowed to Plymouth
South, 8-4, Friday.
The Vineyarders are 2-7-1 on the season.
MVHS basketball
The varsity hoopmen rallied to overcome a nine-point deficit at the
half, 32-23, to beat Old Rochester Regional at Mattapoisett, Friday,
58-55. Matt Rivers led the Vineyard with 19 points. Lucas Brewer contributed
11, two from long range, and Kyle Robertson had 8 points and 14 rebounds.
Rivers, Brewer, and John Swan all cashed game-clinching free throws
in the final minute.
Wareham decided to stay home Monday. The game has been rescheduled
for Feb. 12.
Tomorrow the teams are home to Harwich. The jayvee game starts at
4:30, varsity at 6 pm. The following Fridays games with Seekonk
will also tipoff at 4:30 and 6 pm, a half hour earlier than originally
scheduled.
Jayvees
The MVRHS boys junior varsity hockey team blanked Bourne at the Gallo
Arena, Wednesday, 2-0. Daron Stobie scored first with help from Kenny
MacDonald. The second goal was an empty netter by Warren West. It
was goalie Zach Wallers first high school shutout.
Saturday the JVs lost to Mansfield, 4-2. Truman French and Joel Rebello
did the scoring. Mitch Pachico assisted on both goals. Rebello also
assisted French.
Coach McGroarty was gratified, Monday, when the JVs rallied from a
4-1 deficit to throw a scare into D-Y at the Tony Kent Arena, Goals
were by Sam Hurd, Kenny MacDonald and Joel Rebello. Darren Stobie,
Riley Dobel (2), Michael Pachico, and Tristan Lodge earned assist
credits. But D-Y hung on to win the game, 5-4.
RCBL week 8
The Lakers topped the Patriots, 110-98, and the Timberwolves bested
the Legends, Monday, at the B&G Club.
Karl Kallinich and Heath Estrella led the Lakers with 27 and 24 points
and both had a dozen rebounds. Lakers Jeff LaBell (19) Albie Robinson
(14), and Elmer Silva (10) also scored in double digits.
Damon Mello had his best game of the year pacing the Pats with 26
points. Point guard Jason Dyer added 16 including three from long
distance.
In the second game, the T-Wolves kept their record clean, running
up a 77-40 lead after three periods, then coasting to an 84-62 win.
Jason ODonnell (18) and Asil Cash (16) were high for the Lobos.
Julius Middleton carried the mail for the Legends with 21 points and
20 rebounds.

Youth Hockey
Four on-and four off- Island MV Youth Hockey games were scheduled
for the long weekend.
The MV junior high girls kicked off the weekend with a convincing
7-2 thrashng of the R.I. Panthers. Gillian OCallaghan had a
hat trick and Phebe Bates scored twice. Shelby Ives also scored. Assisting
were Ives (4), Elizabeth Kelleher (2), Prudence Fisher, and Margaret
Johnson. Laura Jernegan was the winning goalie.
The Squirt As lost two to Lower Cape at the Arena on Sunday,
6-1 and 7-0. Max Davies had the lone MV goal assisted by Bobby Perry.
Saturday, at Tony Kent Arena in Dennis, the Squirt As bowed
to Y-D, 4-2. Kyle Francis and Max Davies scored in the third period.
Assist credits went to Davies and Kyp Cooperrider. The goalie was
Mike Sylvia.
The PeeWee A team suffered its first loss of the season, 7-3, to Barnstable.
Taylor Araujo, Jock Cooperrider, and Charles Goldthwaite scored.
Sunday the PeeWee As edged Y-D at Tony Kent, 3-2, on goals by
Colby Gouldrup (2) and Teddy Kram. Alex Door was the net-keeper.
The Bantam A squad played two games on Monday, an 8:30 face-off at
Gallo Arena in Bourne and a 2 pm drop at Tony Kent in Dennis.
Gymnastics
Seven Island gymnasts were among the 625 athletes competing in the
Brestyans American Classic for girls at level 5 to Elite at
Tufts University, Sunday. The event was video-taped to be aired Sunday,
Jan. 30, with commentary by Sharon Miller, the most decorated US gymnast.
At level 6, junior division, Matte Horton, 12, of Oak Bluffs, took
first on beam (9.05) and bars (8.75) and was first all-around with
a score of 34.7. She was third on floor and fourth in the vault.
In the same division, Nikki Alexander, 12, of West Tisbury, was second
in the vault.
At level five, intermediate, Amanda Good, 10, Oak Bluffs, was first
on bars (9.25) and fifth all around (33.75). Hannah Webster, 10, West
Tisbury, was fifth on bars (8.85), sixth on floor (8.4), seventh in
vault (7.65), and seventh all-around (33.3). Lauren Dostal, 10, of
Tisbury placed 8th in the vault (7.65).
In the child division, level 5, Bailey Moreis, 7, Oak Bluffs, was
second on the vault (7.95). Macayah Goodell, 8, West Tisbury, was
sixth on the bars (7.5).
ORR has its way
The MV girls lost to Old Rochester in the Sancy Pachico gym, Friday,
64-36. The Lady Bulldogs went to the free-throw line 20 times and
converted 18. ORRs leading scorer was Cayla Clancy with 20 points,
nine from long range. MVs top scorer was Taylor MacDonald who
had 10. Both Brielle Leonard and Kara Rosenthal scored eight. Friday
the team is at Harwich. |
