The MVRHS boys varsity ice hockey team played its best game of the season, according to Coach Matt Mincone, and shut out D-Y at Dennis, Monday, 3-0.

The Dolphins outshot the Islanders, 11-8 in the first period, but after that the MV defensive game plan limited D-Y to four shots on goal per period.

Nick Townes scored an unassisted goal two and a half minutes into the contest which proved to be all that was needed for the win as Freshman Alex Minnehan stopped all 19 D-Y shots on his goal.

Townes scored again midway through the second period, assisted by Jordan Hoehn, and Steven Greenberg provided a third point at 12:45 with help from Scott Maciel.

Neither team scored in the third frame.

MV ended with 24 shots on goal to D-Y’s 19.

Saturday’s game at the Arena with Mansfield was a travesty that took two hours and 20 minutes to play. Thirty-five penalties were called, 18 on Mansfield, 17 on the Vineyard.

The Hornets led after one, 3-2. MV took a 5-4 lead after two. But Mansfield did all of the scoring in the final period to take the 8-5 win.

Purple points were scored by Jordan Hoehn (2), Mike Giordano, Finn Briggs, and Scott Maciel, with assists by Townes, Briggs, Giordano (2), Hoehn, Maciel and Greenberg.

MV took 34 shots on goal to the Hornets 28.
