Harwich hangs on

Last Friday, the MVRHS boys varsity basketball team set its sights on avenging the December 10, season opening 77-67 loss to Harwich on the Rough Riders court.

They came as close as possible to doing just that without accomplishing the task. In the end there was just not enough time and too much Ryan Soars.

The teams traded hoops early in the game and the score was tied at 14 after seven minutes of play. Then Harwich went on a tear, scoring another 14 points to the Vineyard’s three, and with seven minutes left in the period Harwich was up, 28-17.

At the half-time break the Riders led, 45-32.

Seven Islanders scored in the first half, paced by Tim McHugh and Jacob Vanderhoop, both of whom posted seven points, each with a 3-pointer.

Ryan Soars had 16 for Harwich and teammate David Duarte, 12.

The Islanders raised the level of defensive play packing the key and denying Harwich second shots.

The strategy worked well enough to reduce the Harwich lead to four, 55-51, midway through the second half. Three quick goals, one a 3-pointer, restored an 11-point Harwich advantage with five minutes left.

Then John Swan dropped two of three from the foul line. Tim Scott scored and Lucas Brewer tossed in a two, a two, and a three to make it a four-point game. With only a minute left on the clock the Islanders had to foul to stop the clock. In the final minute the Rough Riders cashed six of six foul shots.

Brewer scored two from the foul line and two more with a layup. Matt Rivers reduced the Harwich lead to two, 70-72.

Soars cashed two more freebies leaving three seconds to play. Vanderhoop’s long-distance basket brought the purple within one as the buzzer sounded., 74-73.

Lucas Brewer’s 22 points led the Vineyard production. Jacob Vanderhoop had 14 and John Swan 9. Both Matt Rivers and Ben Post scored 8.

Ryan Soars was 13 for 14 from the foul line and scored a total of 38 points. Chris MacDonald (12) and David Duarte (11) also made it to double figures.

Jayvees win big

The MVRHS boys junior varsity basketball team trounced Harwich on Friday, 51-36. It might have been more but with his team in front 32-14 at the half, and clearly in charge, Coach Mark Rivers benched his starting five for the second half.

Matt Lucier (10), and Nick Viera (8) led the balanced scoring. Mike Cecilio, Cliff Ibarrando, and David Amabile controlled the boards.

Diana Woods, 19, of Vineyard Haven was one of 350 skaters competing in the 20th Bay State Winter Games at Williamstown, January 15-16. It was Diana’s ninth straight games.

Representing the Martha’s Vineyard Skating Club, Diana won silver medals in Artistic Solo 6 and Freestyle 6. She was also presented with a Bay State Winter Games jacket.

Her performance qualified Diana for the 2005 State Games of America competition to be held in July at Colorado Springs.

Just plain Bill

By Nelson Sigelman

I think the Patriots will beat the Eagles by a score of 25 to 10. I also predict they will display the same character during and after the game that they have shown throughout the season, on and off the playing field.

In an era of less than admirable professional athletes, Patriots fans have more to be proud of than a team that is capable of chalking up wins. The Patriots most recent playoff victory and entire season has been characterized by team character, which my own experience leads me to believe has been shaped by the leadership of coach Bill Belichick.

Last February, I traveled to Nantucket for a public hearing on the Steamship Authority. After the meeting I was sitting around a large table with several people in the Jared Coffin House pub on Nantucket about 9:20 pm when two men walked in and asked if they could get something to eat. The waitress, a young woman, told the men the kitchen closed at 9 pm. After they quietly left someone at the table asked the waitress if she knew that she had just turned away Bill Belichick . She did not. The cook was mortified. He would have gladly cooked a feast for the man who only nine days earlier had coached the Patriots to a Superbowl victory.

But Coach Belichick never asked the question, “Do you know who I am?” and left us all with the answer, a guy with a lot of class.

Who wins the Super Bowl

Who will win the super bowl, the New Enland Patriots or the Philadelphia Eagles, by what score and why?

Donald Herman, varsity football head coach: The Patriots by two touchdowns. “They have better players, better coaching and they are more experienced.”

Bob Hammond, varsity boys soccer coach: The Patriots, 24-21.”Donavan McNab is playing well and will score points. But the Pats offence is clicking and will win a close game.”

Joe Schroeder, MVRHS boys and girls track and cross country coach: The Patriots, 35-19. “My dog told me.”

A.P. Iacovello, former Pop Warner football player, pumps gas at Airport Mobil: The Eagles, 36-21. “They’re a good team and they want it more.”

Greg Rollins, director of the MV Boys & Girls Club: The Patriots, 28-14. “Too many weapons - running game, passing game, defense, special teams. Too many ways they can beat you.”

Glen Field, MVRHS Athletic Dirctor,:The Patriots, 28-14. “Because they are a great TEAM. I wish there were more like them in professional athletics.”

The Rev. Michael R. Nagle, Pastor of the Roman Catholic Churches on the Island and an aviator: The Patriots, by atleast one touchdown. “They are motivated and have the momentum.”

Amy Maciel, J.V. girls basketball coach: The Patriots, 24-17. “they have a dominant running game and strong defense.”

Duncan Pickard, high school athlete, and co-editor of The High School View: The Patriots, 31-14. “Bccause TO is hurt and won’t play and Bill Belichick is a defensive genius.”

Kathy O’Sullivan, marathoner: The Patriots ofcourse, 28-20. “They’re a better all-around team and Tom Brady is the best quarterback in the league.”

Mike Joyce, MVRHS boys varsity basketball coach: The Patriots, 24-14. “Because they don’t make mistakes in a big game and Belichick is the best coach in the NFL.”

Sixteen members of the MV Times staff were poled and their predictrions averaged: Patriots 30, Eagles 17.
