Youth hockey
The only youth hockey game not cancelled by the snowstorm was a Bantam
A nail-biter at the MV Arena with Bourne.
With 14 seconds left on the clock, defenseman Matthew Flynn took the
puck end to end and scored the winning goal, 4-3.
The game was tied after the first period 1-1. The Islanders
goal was by Daren Gazaille, assisted by Colin Hurd.
After two periods, the score was 2-2. The MV goal was by Tad Gold,
assisted by Scott Cleary.
In the third period, Scott Cleary scored with help from Tad Gold and
William Inman, setting the stage for Flynns game-deciding rush.
Mike Capen was the winning goalie.
Three MVYH teams have qualified for the state championships to be
played at Springfield: Bantam Yankees, Bantam As, and PeeWee
As.
An abbreviated Nan Rheault
The annual Nan Rheault girls ice hockey tournament was a victim of
the weekend snow storm as the Cambridge Rindge and Latin team chose
to remain at home rather than risk becoming snowbound on the Vineyard,
The tournament was already in trouble as another of the invited guests,
St. Bernards, had previously cancelled their participation and
MV Coach Sam Sherman was unable to find a replacement no matter how
far afield he looked.
Only Wilmington showed up.
Wilmington (9-0-0) and Marthas Vineyard (2-7-1) faced off at
5 pm, Saturday. The unbeaten Wildcats prevailed, 5-0.
MV Coach Sam Sherman was pleased with his teams efforts. We
played pretty well, he told The Times, especially the
defense: Sara Sylvia, a freshman; Cera Garvin, playing her first year
of high school hockey, and Brianna Sylvia.
Kayla Whelen and Meryl Pye, who was under the weather with a flu-like
bug, also showed grit.
Jen Ward and Dawn McMullin shared goal-keeping duties. MVs record
now is 2-8-1.
Coach Sherman hopes to reschedule a game with Cambridge Rindge and
Latin, probably in Cambridge.
Yesterday the girls were scheduled to play Sandwich here.
Harwich recovers
The MVRHS girls varsity basketball team threw a scare into the defending
state champions of Harwich, Friday, at Harwich, but the Rough Riders
recovered midway in the second half to win going away, 40-33.
The Islanders led at the half, 20-12.
Amanda Gonsalves and Ashley Taylor caught fire in the second period
for the home team. Both of them scored 10 points in the period. Meanwhile
the Harwich defense packed into the paint forcing Islanders to shoot
from outside, a strategy that limited MV to 13 second half points.
Kara Rosenthals 10 points were high for the purple. Amanda Gonzalves
had the game high 16 for Harwich
The Vineyarders are 3-8 on the season. Harwich is 7-6.
Jayvees, too
The MVRHS junior varsity came in second to Harwich, 43-36. The MV
high scorers, Julie Perry and Natalie Lucier, both scored 10 points
and both fouled out late in the game.
Coach Amy Maciels JV squad is 4-5 on the year.
20 miler
The eighth annual MV 20-miler will start at 11 am, Saturday, Feb.
19. The race is limited to 600 runners and closes four hours after
the start.
The race begins at the Vineyard Haven SSA terminal and finishes at
the Oak Bluffs School.
Entry fee is $30, deductible by $1 for each year you have run the
event. Discounts guaranteed for entries received by February 1. See
www.mv20miler.com.
Youre invited
The Cape Cod Curling Club (CCCC) will host its first International
Junior Tournament beginning Friday, January 28 and continuing Saturday
from 9 am and Sunday. The public is invited to attend at no charge.
The Swedish team from greater Stockholm will be led by Bjorn Brandberg,
an exchange student at Falmouth high school. Bjorn chose Falmouth
as his exchange school primarily because of the CCCC. He aspires to
be an Olympic curler.
The CCCC rink is adjacent to the Sports Center in Falmouth.
