The
Red Kennedy
Hanover was the class act at the annual Red Kennedy Mite tournament
at the Arena last weekend, winning all four of its games in the
Olympic division, and scoring 30 times and holding opponents to
a total of six.
Hanovers first two games were shutouts; first they trounced
MV Black, 8-0, and then South Shore, 10-0.
Saturday evening Hanover topped the Acton Boxboro Wolf team, 6-2.
In the Sunday Olympic Division championship round, a repeat with
AB Wolf, they had to overcome a second period 4-2 deficit, with
four goals in the third period while keeping AB off the boards to
pull out a 6-4 win.
All games were played under the two-minute buzzer rule. Every two
minutes the buzzer would sound, time would stop, and all players
except the goalies would be replaced.
The eight teams were divided into two divisions, Olympic and World.
Both Action-Boxboro and Marthas Vineyard entered two teams
in the tourney. The MV Whites, playing in the World League with
Acton Boxboro Page, Braintree, and Coastal finished with a 1-2-1
record. Losing to A-B, 5-1; Coastal, 5-2; tying Braintree, 3-3,
then beating Braintree in the World consolation game, Sunday, 6-4.
Acton Boxboro Page crunched the Coastal Stars, 7-1, in the Sunday
Olympic championship round.
Andrew Carroll was high scorer for the MV Whites with four goals,
including a hat trick in the final game with Braintree. Other scorers
were Callie Jackson (3), Barry Lima, Kyle Stobie,
Matt Davies, Mike Mazza, and Aaron Figueroa.
Credit for nine assists were assigned to Callie Jackson, three to
Andrew Carroll. Also assisting were James Sashin, Kyle Stobie, and
Barney MacDonald.
Acton Boxboro Page scored four goals in the first period and three
in the second, then coasted to a 7-1 decision over the Coastal Stars
to claim the World Division title. All told, A-B Page scored 24
goals and allowed just three.
The MV Blacks In the Olympic League won two, lost two. They bowed
to Hanover, 8-0, and A-B Wolf, 8-3, then shut out the South Shore
Eagles, Saturday evening, 7-0 and almost did it again in the Sunday
consolation game, clipping Eagle Wings, 6-1.
Alexander Vukota led the MV parade to the net with five goals. Both
Andrew Carroll and Austin Morley had three. Also scoring: Darian
Johnson (2), Nick Kent (2), and Oren Osnoss. Wyatt Jenkinson assisted
four times, Vukota thrice. Also aiding and abetting were Sydney
Davies (2), Andrew Carroll (2), Chris Perry, Isaac Sobel, Nick Kent,
Austin Morley, and Oren Osnoss.
The tournament ran like clockwork under the able direction of Linda
Dickson.

Arching
the flood
Between
basketball and baseball, hockey and lacrosse, there is a neat little
bridge season on the Island, volleyball.
The interscholastic volleyball season began Tuesday at the Edgartown
school when Oak Bluffs teams invaded Shiretown for a five-game varsity
set and three games of JV ball under the refereeing gaze of Chip
Story.
The first two varsity games were close and both were won by OB,
25-22 and 25-24. It appeared that the overhand slap serves of OBs
Franklin Taylor, Tad Gold, Dave Flanders and Vinny Iacono were tipping
the scale toward the Cottage City six. But Coach Gary Smiths
crew turned things around in game three and ran off with a 25-15
win. Edgartown was even more dominant in game four as Adalto Souza,
a recent transfer from the charter school, served 10 straight to
close out a 25-11 victory.
In the final 15-point tie-breaker, E-town built a 10-5 advantage
but OB caught up in a rush with Kia Minor serving. But Souza rotated
to the line again and that was all she wrote.
Edgartown also won the junior varsity three-game series, taking
games one and three.
Tisbury, the volleyball champs two years running, began its defense
of the Island Cup yesterday against West Tisbury.

Varsity baseball
The Varsity baseball schedule lists 20 games, the same number as
last year, but with a few changes. Coach Hoehns nine will
not face East Bridgewater, a team to which they lost twice last
year, nor Chatham which they beat, 8-5. Instead they will play Falmouth,
D-Y, and Provincetown.
They hope to improve on their 2004 record of 7-13.
The team graduated seven players, much of its power, from a 15-player
roster. On the bright side, the team still has the three things
it must have to succeed: pitching, pitching, and pitching. Matt
Kurth, Jacques Penicaud, Billy Panek, and Ryan Rossi are still available.
Four pre-season scrimmages will be played at Nauset (March 26),
Mashpee, and Plymouth North and here with Westford Academy on April
3. The season opener at Sandwich is April 5. After three other away
games, the Vineyarders are home to Greater New Bedford Voke on Saturday,
April 16.
Its a demanding schedule, remarked Doug Hoehn,
beginning his tenth year as head coach, but theres a
lot of enthusiasm, too. Were eager to get started.
Boys Tennis
With the same number of matches, 17, the boys tennis team opens
its 05 season at home, April 1, with Bourne.
Home and home matches with Sturgis and perennial powerhouse Barnstable
have replaced Carver and New Bedford on the schedule.
Five of the seven starters from last years 16-3 team that
went three deep into the MIAA post-season tourney have graduated.
Patrick and Jamie Smadbeck, the number one and two singles players
in 04 and this years co-captains, return.
Canny Coach Ned Fennessy has a way of finding and developing new
players, especially doubles combos, and fashioning winning teams.
Some the coach has his eyes on include seniors Nick Wallen, Jeremy
Mechem, Jonathan Parker, and sophomores Tim McHugh and Mike Diaz.
There are still a lot of unknowns, but I would give odds that the
Vineyard will have another winning season.
Boys lacrosse
The boys varsity lacrosse schedule calls for 20 games, one more
than last year. Dropped from the schedule are Brookline and Hanover;
added are Austin Prep, Bishop Stang, and Barnstable.
Last year the Vineyarders finished atop the Maritime League with
nine league wins and one loss to New Bedford. Over all they
were 14-4. They were eliminated in the MIAA post-season tourney
by Cohasset, a team they had previously beaten.
Head coach Peter Ferrini, who started the program in 1995, will
be helped again by Chris Greene (the jayvee coach), Chris Kiersted,
and new goalie coach Lang Clark.
Peter is rarin to go: We have a great group of coachable
kids with a lot of talent.
Edison Parzanese and Andrew Farrissey are co-captains.
The season opens here April 1 with Sandwich
Track and Field
The first four track and field meets are all dual meets and are
all away, at West Bridgewater, Bristol Plymouth, Blue Hills, and
Southeastern. Also, they are all Mayflower League meets.
The next four are at home with Carver, Tri-County, Diman Regional,
and Sacred Heart. The ninth dual meet is at Barnstable.
Barnstable and Tri County are new to the schedule. Dropped from
the agenda is Duxbury.
In his 11th year as boys track coach, Joe Schroeder will be hard
pressed to make up for graduated, sure-point winners such as Hans
Broscheit, Amaru Pareja, Tyler Pachico, Seth Coleman, Kevin Hopkins,
and Hans Buder, to name some.
But there is talent returning and more growing in the lower classes
and the coach is guardedly optimistic.
Sacred Heart should be the main hurdle for the Vineyard to win its
third Mayflower League championship in a row. (In 2002 MV and SH
tied.)
Assistant coaches (for boys and girls teams) are Steve Barbee (long
jump and sprints), Melissa Walley (distance runners) and Ray Leighton
(high jump). Former MVRHS stars Kara Schemeth and Joel Graves have
volunteered to help.
