Lakers make it to the finals

In the third RCBL semifinal playoff basketball game between the Patriots and the Lakers at the B&G, the Lakers prevailed 108-87, thereby winning the right to face the undefeated Timberwolves in a best-two-of-three championship series.

Given the fact that the RCBL season began in early November and that your team, no matter which, had already lost to the T-Wolves four times, one might suppose that some would be tempted to opt for a loss and win the right to stay home of a Monday night.

If anyone was so tempted it was not perceptible. Both teams played as if their manhood hung in the balance.

At the end of the first 12-minute quarter, the Pats were up by one, 22-21.

The Lakers ran off 10 unanswered points to open the second quarter, putting them ahead to stay. At the half it was 54-39. When three quarters had been played the Lakers held a 78-67 lead.

With seven treys, Elmer Silva led Laker scorers with 28 points. Heath Estrella (20), Karl Kallinich (20), Albie Robinson (15) and John Healy (14) all made it to twin columns. Super sub Chris Forbes was a tiger under the boards.

Damon Mello paced the Pats offense with 23 points. Jason Dyer had 20, 15 of which came from long distance. Also in double digits: Sandy Fisher, Teejay Roginski, and Travis Baptiste, all with 13.

Ryan Ruley and Pat Mercier ably maintained law and order.

The Lakers vs. Timberwolves finals begin at the B&G, Monday, at 7 pm. Admission is free.

A glimpse at MVRHS girls spring sports

Lacrosse

Head Coach Betsy Dripps’ team which, won 7 of 18 games last year, will miss the ’04 co-captains, Liza Reynolds and Emma Lovewell, but those two and Samantha Schwager are the only ones gone from a 20-player roster, so it will be an experienced team that opens at home versus Sandwich on Friday, April 1, at 3:30 pm.

This year’s 18-game schedule includes Nauset, Marshfield, and Nantucket, but not Wayland, Weston, Falmouth and Cohasset.

So far forty girls have signed up to play lacrosse. The team is battle-tested with nine seniors and 15 juniors captained by Isabelle Lew and Kerry O’Donoghue.

Kim Drew is assistant coach and Donna Nagle is coach of the junior varsity.

Softball

Three players of the ’04 softball team graduated: Amanda Klein, Catherine Silva, and Kim DeBettencourt. This year’s team is more experienced than last year’s, replete with juniors, and should improve significantly on the ’04 record of 5-15.

Katherine DeBettencourt and Brielle Leonard are co-captains.

Coach Pat Mitchell admits to being “guardedly optimistic.”

A 20-game schedule begins at East Bridgewater on Friday, April 1. The next three games are here versus Sandwich, Dennis-Yarmouth, and Old Rochester. D-Y and Carver replace Marian and Middleboro on the agenda.

Bill Belcher and Lisa Knight are assisting coaches. Samantha Burns will coach the junior varsity, scheduled to play 14 games, starting at East Bridgewater, April 1.

Track and Field

The ’05 MVRHS girls track and field team is strong in the distance and middle-distance races and in the weight throws, competitive in the hurdles and jumps, and needs help in the sprints.

Twenty-one girls are signed up thus far.

There are six dual meets scheduled. The first two are away at West Bridgewater (April 7) and Dighton Rehoboth. The next three meets are here. Carver visits May 2, and Diman Regional May 10. Sacred Heart, always tough to beat, the reigning Mayflower girls champion, is here May 12. The final dual meet is at Barnstable.

Joe Schroeder has been coaching girls track and field since 1989. Assisting coaches are Steve Barbee, Melissa Walley, Ray Leighton, Kara Schemeth, and Joel Graves.

Tennis

The good news is that Stephen Hutchinson of Aquinnah has signed on to be the new girls tennis coach and all of last year’s varsity are returning.

The 17-game ’05 schedule has dropped Mashpee; otherwise it is the same as ’04. The season opener is with Sandwich here, March 29 at 3 pm.

Coach Hutchinson played tennis at Tabor Academy, where his father was the coach, and later at Hobart. He has been the tennis coach at the Chilmark Community Center for 25 years.

His team should improve on its 12-5 record.

We wish the new coach and the team well

Coed Sailing

The sailing team’s full schedule of 28 regattas begins at Barnstable, March 26. Thus far, 30 students have enlisted in the MVRHS navy with Admiral Doug Heil. MVRHS is ranked 14th of 80 New England schools and looks to move up.

Of special note is the New England Scholastic Sailing Assn. Championship regatta to be held here, May 21-22.

Looking down the road to 2006, the Vineyard will also host the National Sailing Championship regatta when the top 12 schools in the country will compete here on Memorial Day weekend.

Alex Bettencourt, an alumnus of the program, is assistant coach. Of great help already are Sail Martha’s Vineyard and the Edgartown and Vineyard Haven Yacht Clubs. Coach Heil says there’s room for lots more help, especially during the championship regattas.

Thomas to Texas
Thomas Goodell was 7th all around with a score of 47.7 in the boys level 9 state gymnastics competition at Yellowjackets in Middleton, helping his four-man team win the state title and qualify for the regionals at Springfield College.

Other members of the winning team were Kip Weber of Stowe, who finished in first place, Matt Felleman in second, and Dan Felleman, 8th. The Kelleman brothers are from Medway.

Thomas medaled in the pommel horse, rings, and parallel bars events.
