Goodells in
Miami
Thomas Goodell (12) and Macayah Goodell (8) were among the more than
600 gymnasts from 27 countries competing in the International Invitational
at the Coconut Grove Convention Center in Miami, Fla., last weekend.
At level 9 (13-15 year old boys) Thomas placed 12th all-around with
a 46.6 score. His best event was the rings, even though he failed
to stick his double somersault dismount.
Thomas performed well enough to qualify for the national meet in May
at Houston, Texas, when he hopes to make the Junior National Olympic
squad.
A highlight for Thomas was being able to practice with Todd Thornton
of the Senior National team and winner at the Elite level at Miami.
Macayah competed at the 7-9 age-level and was 17th overall. Macayah
especially enjoyed meeting girls from other countries. She was particulary
taken with the team from Tobago and Trinidad. She was the only English
speaker on her squad of 28 gymnasts.
Volleyball update
After defeating West Tisbury three games to one, Tisbury, the defending
interscholastic volleyball champions, ran into a buzz saw when Oak
Bluffs came to call, Thursday.
The coeds from Cottage City swept taking three games in a row.
Tisbury had trouble returning the overhand slap-shot serves of David
Fanders who ran off seven points including five aces to overtake Tisbury
late in the second game, and Franklin Taylor who served up 12 points
in a row, includng four aces, to close out game three, 25-19.
The OB jayvees also dominated Tisbury winning three games in a row.
Edgartown took the first two games with West Tisbury, then saw the
Up Islanders even the count before winning the tie-breaking fifth
game to remain undefeated in the early going.
OB evens the count
Oak Bluffs avenged its season opening loss to Edgartown winning the
first two games and the fourth in their match in the Oak Bluffs gym,
Tuesday
OB scored seven points in a row at the end of the first game, with
Tad Gold serving up a half-dozen aces to claim, 25-20.
Tad was a key in the second game as well, serving up five points to
get his team to 21. Jesse Steere was on the line for the final three
points. OB won, 25-19
Edgartown took the third game. With Laura Jernegan serving, the Eagles
racked up a dozen points and went ahead 16-2. The Blazers never really
came close. Edgartown won, 25-12.
OB spurted to an 11-3 lead in the early going of game four and kept
a comfortable lead until the 25-18 conclusion.
Mondays Tisbury vs. West Tisbury game was postponed
Fishermen release winter blues
Many Island fishermen take advantage of off-season fishing shows to
while away the time until the fish arrive. On Saturday and Sunday
the Mass. Striped Bass Association will sponsor a sportfishing expo
featuring more than 90 exhibitors, speakers, and seminars at the Independence
Mall in Kingston.
Island resident Greg Skomal, state Division of Marine Fisheries biologist
and shark expert, will be among the featured speakers. Greg will be
talking about the great white shark that caused a stir last fall.

The third annual Woods Hole Riverdog half marathon was run Saturday
in miserable conditions: snow and rain, slush on top of ice, uncomfortably
cold and wet. It was a wonderful day to sit in front of a fire with
a good book.
But seven Islanders made the trip and the run.
First Islander to finish was Tom Robinson in 1:42:41. He was second
in his 50-59 age group.
Not far behind was Patrick Parker in 1:43:06. Garry Medders reached
the finish line in 1:45:03. Kim OCallaghan and Bill Brown ran
together and completed the course in 1:49:44. Joe Guerin missed the
8:15 ferry, and started the race at least a half-hour late so his
time of 2:39:29 is misleading.
Sunday the law Enforcement half marathon and five mile Run to Remember
were run in Boston. Bill Browns time in the half marathon was
1:50:05. John McCarron made it in 2:01:28, and Jonathan Searle finished
in 2:04:03. Jim Neville and Robert Ogden completed the 5-mile run
in 42:16 and 42:57. Mick Vukota made it in 50:12, Dan Townes in 51:41,
Eric Bettcncourt in 53:43, and David Murphy in 57:23.
Congratulations to all.
Correction please
Due to a regretted misreading of the Red Kennedy tournament game sheets,
four MV Black assists which should have been credited to Brahmin Thurber-Carbone
were assigned to Wyatt Jenkinson. Wyatt, in fact, was the busy goal
tender for both the MV White and Black teams.
Surfing Sayres
Solvig and Rasmus Sayre of Vineyard Haven competed in the mid winter
windsurfing championships at Merritt Island, Fla., during the winter
school vacation. After five races in the under-15 division, Solvig,
a seventh grader in the Tisbury school, finished first. His sister,
Rasmus, a second grader, was second.
They have pretty good coaches. Their father is a former world champion
windsurfer. Their mother was the Swedish windsurfing champ.
Where are they?
Ben Gunn, MVRHS 03, helped the Boston Bulldogs of the Atlantic
Junior Hockey League to the Atlantic Junior Hockey League championship,
scoring a goal and assisting on four others in the teams semi
finals win at Salem, N.H., last Saturday. Ben was recognized as one
of the three stars of the game. The Bulldogs went on to win the championship
game, trouncing the New York Bobcats, 4-1.
The Bulldogs had finished the regular season with an overall 69-7
record.
The Wheaton College lacrosse team looks to its Division III All-American
and three-time All-NEWMAC All-Conference choice, Vanessa Pisano, MVFHS
01, to lead it to a third straight conference title and a return
to the national tourney. Last year Vanessa scored a team high 81 goals
and had 13 assists. She also paced the team in caused turnovers and
draw controls.
Squirts and Whalers
The Nantucket Youth Hockey Squirt A team paid a visit to the MV Arena
Saturday to play the MVYH Squirt As, twice.
The Vineyarders won the morning game, 9-2, with three goals by Kyle
Francis, all in the first period, and singles by Jordy Abrams, Max
Davies, Harrison Rodigues, Shay Hill, Charlie Ashmin, and Conor Chisholm.
Most of the scoring was unassisted, but assists were credited to Tyson
Araujo (2), Jordy Abrams, and Kyle Francis (2).
In the afternoon the Vineyarders won again, this time 7-1. Both Jordy
Abrams and Tyson Araujo scored twice. Also beating the Whaler goalie:
Kyle Francis, Bobby Perry, and Conor Chisholm with help from
Charlie Ashmun (3), Kyle Francis (2), and Tyson Araujo (2).
Girl all-stars
At the Sandwich tournament last weekend, the MV Youth Basketball all-star
girls team won two of three games, beating the Sandwich B team, Saturday,
32-23, behind Lauren Gibsons game high 19 points and Kia Minors
19 rebounds.
Also Saturday, the Islanders had trouble finishing layups and lost
to Falmouth, 30-16. Kayla Morris and Alexia Schroeder accounted for
half the MV points, each with four. Alexia grabbed 10 rebounds.
Sunday the Islanders beat Acushnet, 32-26. Alexia had a game high
eight points. Also scoring: Lauren Gibson (5), Hayley Pierce, Erin
Morris, and Katie Hines (all with 4). Kia Minor ruled the boards with
19 rebounds.
The previous week the MV all-stars were at Falmouth, losing to the
host team, 34-16 Saturday; to the Sandwich A squad, 28-15, Sunday;
and beating Berkley 20-17.
Coach Amy Maciel hopes the team can find the $200 entry fee to play
in the Bourne tourney, March 26-27.
All-star boys
Two weeks ago the MV all-star youth basketball boys team won one and
lost two in the Falmouth tourney.
They beat the host club, 39-35, catching up in the second half and
scoring winning points in the closing minutes. Mike McCarthy (11,
including 3 treys), Franklin Taylor (9) and Justin Mercier (8) did
most of the scoring.
Fall River, an AAU all-star team, was too much for the Islanders to
handle and walked off with a 58-21 win. Nick Gross was a defensive
standout.
Grosss nine points were tops for the Islanders versus Yarmouth.
Justin Mercier contributed seven more. Cody Brewer had six rebounds.
MV fell behind in the first half then clawed its way almost all the
way back in the second. Yarmouth 42, MV 39.
Last week at Sandwich, the Vineyarders came close to victory but lost
to South Plymouth, 34-32, and to Yarmouth, 26-24.
Despite poor shooting MV stayed close to Plymouth with excellent team
defense. The second half was a seesaw battle. Justin Mercier back-rimmed
a final three pointer.
The rematch with Yarmouth was a hard-fought battle that could have
gone either way, but the Cape boys finished with the 26-24 edge. Billy
Reagan and Peter Ferrini played solid defense.
In their final match the Islanders ran up 43 points to Sandwichs
28. Nick Goss led the parade to the hoop with 12 points. Randall Jette
added six and Jess Swaringer had four. Gross and Andrew McElhinney
ruled the boards.
This weekend the boys are entered in the Barnstable tournament.
PeeWees at Springfield
The MVYH PeeWee A team finished their 25-4-2 season in the state championship
tournament at Springfield last weekend.
Their first game was a win versus Holy Name, 4-3. Both Colby Gouldrup
and Jock Cooperrider scored twice assisted by Patrick Hart, Charles
Goldthwait, and Chris Davies.
The Islanders edged a strong Wakefield squad in their second game,
3-2. Gouldrup, Cooperrider, and Davies scored with help from Nelson
Dickson, Teddy Kram, Davies, and Gouldrup.
In the third game the Vineyarders went up against a powerhouse from
Westwood and came in second, 7-2. Kram and Davies did the scoring.
It was a season to remember. The Islanders were Cape Cod Conference
champions. They won the Ryan Mone Tournament. They tied for first
in the Charles River Challenge. Coach Dan Gouldrup remarked, They
had a great year. I felt privileged to coach such a fine group of
young adults.
More kudos
Bruce Mahaffey, a coach of the Bantam Yankees, shared the following
in a letter to the players parents.
Following the 6-0 defeat of Y-D at the Tony Kent Arena which put a
lock on the division championship, the arena scorekeeper told the
team that he had been keeping score at the Tony Kent for 16 years
and had never observed a group of youth hockey players as respectful
and well behaved on the bench as our kids. He also said he had
never observed as nurturing and supportive a staff of coaches
as our staff. He concluded by telling the kids that they were
very fortunate to have such an exceptional group of teammates and
coaches and that they should be very proud of themselves.

for the MV Boys & Girls Club, firemen and policemen from the several
Island towns will compete as 3-men relay teams vying for the Marthas
Vineyard Boys & Girls Club Relay Challenge Cup. The U.S. Coast
Guard has already entered a team and may be hard to beat.
The Relay Challenge is the brainchild of St. Patrick Parker.
